May 2017 Mogeely and Midleton Hosting Upcoming Fundraisers for Ballinacurra’s Cian Twomey by ALAN SHEEHAN unique

Mogeely will host a day-long fund-

raiser at the start of June involving a soccer match between two pubs and a night of entertainment in aid of Cian’s Care. The Mad Match will

be held to fundraise for Cian’s Care, a group set up to raise money for

Ballinacurra’s Cian

Twomey to receive spe- cialised treatment for the rare form of cancer with which the

18-year-old

was diagnosed. On Sunday, 4 June two

teams each representing either the local Sports- man’s Inn or the Im- okilly Tavern will play in the Mad Match from 4pm at Mogeely pitch. A night of entertainment at the Sportsman’s Inn will follow the match, includ- ing the members of los- ing pub’s team undergo- ing either a head shave or a leg waxing. The night will feature music from Billy Cusack and the Two Dan’s along with a raffle and an auction.

The weekend before

sees Midleton’s Mark O’Sullivan, better known to many as Fanta, cycle a stationary bicycle for five hours, without a break, also as a fundraiser for Cian’s Care. Mr O’Sullivan will

attempt the feat while wearing full firefighter’s turnout gear – which weighs approximately 40 pounds or more – outside the Courthouse in Midle- ton on Saturday, 27 May. The

also feature

Spinathon will dancers

from Midleton’s Studio D, Lifetime Martial Arts Midleton and Billie-Jean Sargent’s Rhythm Dance Company, while DJ Kil- lian O’Reilly will be pro-

viding music throughout. The Thursday before, 25 May, Cian’s school CBS Secondary School in Midleton will hold a fundraising concert

for

both Cian’s Care and Aaron’s Hope, which aims to raise money for 16-year-old Aaron Mc- Mahon, who suffers from a different rare form of cancer called chordoma, to undergo specialised ra- diation therapy in Essen, Germany. The headline acts for the concert are the Frank and Walters, Goldfish Syndrome and August Walk, and tickets are available at the CBS Secondary School and McCarthy’s Newsagents in Midleton.

Cian’s Care aims to

raise the €65,000 neces- sary for Cian to under- go specialised radiation therapy. Cian was diag- nosed earlier this year with paraganglioma, a rare form of cancer, with tumours found in his stomach and abdomen. The treatment required to combat Cian’s illness is unavailable in Ireland and he will need to travel to Rotterdam, the Neth- erlands. More information on

Cian’s condition can be found at Cianscare.com or the Cians Care Face- book page while a Go- FundMe page has been set up under the title Cians Care.

Contract For Midleton CCTV Ring Of Steel Signed

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Would be criminals in

Midleton might want to look up before commit- ting a crime in future. Last Tuesday 16 May

Cork County Council signed a contract

with

ADA Security Systems to cast a digital net around the market town protect- ing businesses and homes close to the Main Street. Since 1992 the North

Cork firm has supplied CCTV to town centres providing, large organi- sations with cutting edge systems. The

new hi-tech

CCTV system is expect- ed to be operational by September 2017. The €100,000 contract

for a centralised CCTV hub to help reduce crime in Midleton was signed by Deputy County May- or Michael Hegarty at the Municipal building off the Old Youghal road. Councillor Hegarty

said the system was vital in maintaining the safety

and security of resident’s, visitors and the business community. He said “unfortunately

the Gardaí a lot of times look for the

assistance

of private CCTV in an effort to resolve the type of crimes that are out there. Hopefully every- one can rest easy in their beds knowing there is a CCTV system.” The hub based in Mid-

leton Garda station will cover 26 cameras and take in locations around the town including Up- per Mill Road Railway Station Junction, Lower Mill Road Park Street Junction, the

Court

House / Gooses Acre Gyratory, Main Street North and South, Brod- erick street, The Rock/ Distillery Walk

(en-

trance), St Mary’s Road (Convent Cross), Church Lane / Riverside Way Junction, Cork Road and the Northern Relief Road. The increased securi-

ty measures include an automatic number plate

recognition data base. This means, for ex-

ample, that a vehicle registered as stolen or a vehicle with fake number plates could in future be picked up as it enters or leaves Midleton. Superintendent

John

Quilter said similar sys- tems in other

locations

have contributed to a re- duction in crime. He said the new system will be an invaluable aid to the police with their investi- gations and can also stop criminals from commit- ting offences and break- ing the law. “If we can see things

starting to fester we can divert our resources to a particular area in the town. Which we wouldn’t have before other than relying on a member of the public ringing in and saying there’s something brewing here.” The system is designed

to be self-reliant and have optimum coverage. The application for a CCTV system for Mid- leton was first made

in 2014. Funding of €100,000 was provided in Midleton Town Council’s budget in 2013 for the in- itiative.

In 2014 Midleton CCTV Ltd was estab- lished with membership of the company drawn

from members of the for- mer Town Council’s Joint Policing Committee. J&N

Security

da Siochana. A number of surveys

Con-

sultants Ltd advised and prepared plans and speci- fications for the system to meet the requirements of the council and An Gar-

were carried out to en- sure optimum benefit from the scheme. Following the detailed

survey of the area the Garda Commissioner had recommended some

changes to the plan,

which amounted to the delay in providing the system. The Garda Commis-

sioner signed off on the system last September allowing the project to go to tender.
