Midleton’s Books 4 U Charity Shop Puts Out The Call for Volunteers

by ALAN SHEEHAN Midleton’s Books 4 U

charity bookstore is look- ing for people willing to volunteer their time this summer.

Books 4 U, which is

run by Midleton St Vin- cent de Paul, is staffed by volunteers but faces a possible staff shortage

as the summer months approach. “We’re just

looking

for people to give a few hours a week to look af- ter the shop,” said Mr Walsh. “It would be ide- al for Transition Year students to volunteer for such a good cause and it would look good on a CV. The only thing you

might need to learn is how to operate the till and you’ll learn that eas- ily. We’ll show you what to do.”

Books 4 U is a dedicat-

ed bookstore that sells a wide range of new and donated books for pric- es between €1-4 with all proceeds going towards Midleton SVP.

said Mr Walsh. “I’m hoping, and it depends on how many I get, to have two people in the store at a time so if one goes, there’s another to look after the shop. It could be a couple of hours here and there, or even just once a week.” Those

Midleton Relay For Life Open Night by ALAN SHEEHAN The Open Night for

Midleton Relay for Life was well supported last Thursday, 11 May. The Open Night, host-

ed by the Midleton Park Hotel, saw more than 40 people attend to listen to guest speakers, attain information on the Re- lay For Life in Midleton and register for the event scheduled for 26 August.

“We were with it,” said

delighted Elaine

Duggan, Public Rela- tions Officer for Re- lay for Life Midleton. “About 40 people attend- ed and we had a great sign up of teams on the night for the Relay. We were very glad with the night and delighted that so many took the chance to register their teams.” The Open Night fea- tured four speakers who

talked about the differ- ent aspects of battling cancer. “Mary Quinn from

the Irish Cancer Soci- ety briefly ran through where the funds go so,” said Ms Duggan, “and a lot of it goes to research in UCC. Dr [Sharon] McKenna from Cork Cancer Research Cen- tre explained what they do for research. It’s not just

researching a cure

for cancer, but cures for cancers as there are so many different

types.

It’s such a broad illness and it effects everybody, from smallies right up to older people. Then Ade- line, a teenage survivor of cancer, spoke about her fundraising for Irish Cancer Society and Our Lady’s Children’s Hos- pital, Crumlin. Finally Caroline

Byrne spoke of how the Relay affect-

ed her and how she got involved. She has very strong memories of last year’s relay and she’s the team coordinator for this year.”

Midleton Relay for

Last

year it raised €20,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. “We would like to
