sport@eastcorkjournal.ie East Cork Soccer Notes Youghal United A.F.C. by WIL VARNEY

AGM Youghal United Annual General Meeting 26 May 2017 at 8pm Cumann Na Daoine All

members encour- aged to attend

Munster Senior League Junior Division 1 Youghal travelled to Cobh last night (Friday) to play their last and six- teenth league

would be the best I reckon. Paul Kelly or “Gerry” as he is better known proba- bly, scored one of the best goals ever seen by a player in a Youghal jersey. Youghal won a free kick just inside their own half. As players were

lads that came in did very well to help the team come through this one. A goal from Leigh Des-

getting

game of their campaign. The

lads had already won the league with two games to go, last week. After playing only 48 hours earlier and that cup game going all the way to penalties, the lads would be forgiven for tak- ing the foot off the pedal, in a game that they didn’t need to take points from. The importance of a good squad came to the fore again last night as the management team ro- tated the squad trying to rest some lads who were either carrying knocks or had played a huge amount of game time over the last few weeks. Due to the lads success this year

across

all the cup competitions both locally and national- ly, Youghal could end up playing around 40 games this season, which is a huge amount of games. Although Youghal

as

such had nothing to play for last night, second place and promotion is still up for grabs between three teams, so it was only fair to all those teams that Youghal put in a performance. Last nights game saw Youghal go a goal down earlier on in the game, but to be fair all the action that mattered concerning Youghal went to the last eight minutes of this game. Firstly with four min-

utes remaining in normal time, a volley from Cian Daly saw Youghal equal- ise. Then nearly four min- utes into injury time saw Youghal get a winner with the last kick of the game and what a winner it was. Hard to put into words this goal,

extraordinary

in position around the edge of the Cobh penalty area, Gerry spotted that the keeper was 7/8 yards off his line and kept his position there. Everyone expected Gerry to put the ball into the box including his own players, but he un- leashed a thunderbolt of a shot from all of 50 yards which caught out the keep- er and dipped under the bar and into the back of the net without hitting the ground. An amazing goal, fit to

win any game from a great player. It literally was the last kick of the game, as the ref then blew for full time giving Cobh no chance to try to equalise. Youghal now rest up until their next game on Tuesday night, when they play St. Mary’s away in the semi final of the Junior Super Cup, with the Final being played in Turners Cross. Youghal have had a punishing schedule of late and next week is no excep- tion. Youghal play again then on Thursday night in another semi final, this time the John Hayes Cup away again in Ballincollig. So a hectic week ahead again for the lads and the very best of luck to them. I reckon they would agree, that they would prefer it this way, than being fin- ished after league game.

last night’s

John Hayes Cup Quarter Final Youghal United 1 - 1 St

Mary’s (AET) Youghal Win 5-4 on

pens Youghal progressed to

the semi final of the John Hayes Cup on Wednesday night with a win on penal- ties. With a depleted squad on the night, Youghal had 5 lads unfortunately missing through suspen- sion. The lads picked up 4 yellow cards each over the season leading to the suspensions. To be fair the

CSL Under 12 Division 6 Youghal United 7 - 1 Ballinhassig

Ballinhassig were the

visitors to Ardrath Park on a bright Sunday Morning and they put on a fighting display despite being over- matched by the home side. Bradley

mond set Youghal on their way and on a couple of oc- casions should have went 2 up but couldn’t convert their chances, and paid the price. With eight minutes remaining in the half St Mary’s equalised with a great header to go level. Again in the second half

Youghal had a few chances to get a second but again couldn’t

get that elusive

second, which meant the game going to extra time and eventually

penalties.

Youghal went through af- ter scoring all 5 penalties with St Mary’s missing one.

It really showed in this

match the need for a large good quality squad to be able to compete in the nu- merous cups as well as the league with the amount of games the lads are playing. Youghal face a very very tough task, with 3 more games over the next sev- en days. Firstly they play Cobh Wanderers away on Friday night in their last league game. Then they head to

play St Mary’s

again on Tuesday night in the semi final of the Super Cup and then play away to Ballincollig on the Thursday night in the semi final of the John Hayes Cup which as I said a very tough ask to play 2 cup semi finals in two days. Hopefully the lads will

be able to add at least one of the cups to the league title to cap an already ex- cellent season.

fied defence and scored his second goal 2-0 Youghal after 6 minutes. The third goal came

from our defence Orin Brooks broke up one of Ballinhassig’s attacks passed the ball to Sean Moloney who in turn passed to William on the right

wing. William ran

down the wing cut in and scored a fine team goal 3-0 Youghal after 14 minutes. Ballinhassig threw cau- tion to the wind and tried to attack down the left wing their attacker crossed the ball only for our brilliant goalkeeper Dylan Lane to dive and collect the ball in his safe arms. Dylan re- leased the ball into Conor Galvin who in turn fed the ball to Bradley who ran on to finish the move with a clinical finish 4-0. At this point Youghal

were in full flow and Ball- inhassig put on a brave dis- play but were overmatched on the day. Well done to Youghal United’s U12s on another impressive perfor- mance. Cork Schoolgirls Soccer League U14 Youghal United 5 - 1

Macroom This was our last league

game of the season and the third meeting of these two teams this year. Youghal were yet to come out with a win against Macroom this season having lost 1 nil away and losing on penalties in a cup game at home earlier in the season. Knowing this was going to be a tough one we were determined to give it our best shot.

On a windy Saturday Maleka

pounced on a bit of loose play to steal the ball and run through slotting the ball coolly into the net 1-0 Youghal after 1 minute. In the sixth minute Bradley received a delightful pass from Sean Kenneally he ran at the heart of a terri-

morning we warmed up and decided to play with the wind in the first half to try and put as much pres- sure as possible early on. The team today made up of Aoibhe Daly in goal. Aoibhe is playing a num- ber of years above her age as our U14 keepers Joy and Agatha were both missing today. Without Aoibhe we would have been in real trouble and I would just like to say a special thanks to Aoibhe for her contribu- tion this season. The back four was Lucy

who is another player play- ing above her age and has played super all

season,

Ava who is always solid at the back , Aoibhe O’Flynn

our captain today and has been a true leader on and off the pitch all year, a re- ally inspirational player to all of us and Zuzanna who has been unbelievable all year. I never remember her having a bad game and has got some big knocks only to bounce back as strong as ever. The midfield of Hannah

who covers every blade of grass in every game and always keeps fighting no matter what. Blathin an- other girl who has really grown as a solid and im- portant midfielder for us. She has fought to keep her position by performing outstanding in matches and training and done this always with a big smile. Emily who has been our controlling midfield play- er in every game. Tough challenges

and opening

up opportunities to go on the attack have been Emi- ly’s best attributes and has probably played the most minutes of any player this season. Playing between midfield and attack was Molly who has had some really solid performances for us as a striker but has recently moved to a more midfield role to use her passing and shooting abil- ities to the optimum. Up front we had Leah

who has put in a real bat- tle all season to fight her way onto the team and get some really important goals for us and our other striker

today was Ciara.

Ciara who after this match turned out to be the top scorer of the season and is another girl who has de- veloped from been a wing- er to a striker has played some fantastic games for us and the only girl to get a hat-trick this season. On the bench we have

some real quality players and would make there way onto any team was Kate who was given a small rest today as she is really busy playing with Imokilly is a really solid defender who gives 100% in every game, Lorna another U12 player who has worked her way up to getting games with the U14 girls in defence. Kellie who has played in attack and defence for us and before today was joint top scorer has battled well and always done as she was asked either in attack

or defence. Our final sub today was Whitney who again plays up front with us and has popped up for some great goals. Whitney has so much pace that no girl can stay with her once she gets passed the de- fence. The game started

as

planned with the Youghal girls getting a lot of the ball in the Macroom half because of the strong wind but failed to break down the solid defence. Against the run of play Macroom caught us on the break and put a super shot passed Aoibhe in goal. We were shocked to

say the least

and with 5 mins gone this was not on the plan to- day. However we stuck to the plan and kept fighting to attack every chance we got. Our midfield quartet along with our attacking duo were

playing some

fantastic ball, passing mov- ing shooting and finally got the break they needed when we got a free at the edge of the box. Molly stepped up to take and with a powerful shot and a strong easterly put the ball over the defence and bur- ied it in the bottom cor- ner of the net. 1-1 and we had a game on. With ten minutes to go we kept the pressure on and had most chances we decided to shore up the defence and bring Kate on for Lucy. This helped us settle down in midfield and were able to put more balls over the top one of which Leah got on the end of and shot one straight passed the keeper from a tight angle to put us 2-1 up.

Half-time 2-1 At halftime we knew we

would be playing against a strong wind and decid- ed to take off Ciara and Leah up front and bring on Whitney up front and put Kellie on in midfield to help with the Macroom onslaught. This was mas- ter stroke and was really making a big difference. Macroom couldn’t break us down and we even went on the attack ourselves and put a fantastic ball over the top which Whitney latched onto and just got there be- fore the outrushing keeper to poke it passed and put us up 3-1. Not content with a 2 goal lead the Youghal girls got corner after cor-

ner which Macroom were struggling to deal with and when the ball broke to Kellie who shot took a deflection and went passed the helpless keeper. 4-1 up and in total control. We made our final two chang- es bringing Lorna on and bringing

Ciara back on

for Molly who picked up a knock. Ciara went back on knowing that now Emi- ly, Kellie and herself were all joint top goal scorers for the season and one more goal for any of them would give them the golden boot. This was probably the best motivation any girl could get and it wasn’t long be- fore she got on the end of a cross and blasted it into the top corner. This was by far our performance of the

best

year and a real glimpse of what’s to come next sea- son. Game over and the final score was 5-1 to the Youghal girls. Our player of the match

today has to go to Molly whose goal from the free and two assists along with a battling game in midfield has to go down as her best game. Well done Molly keep up the good work. We will train away for a

few more weeks so if any girl wants to come along a start soccer give Jonathan a call on 086 8563292.

PITCH

DEVELOPMENT WORK AT ARDRATH PARK Youghal United is well

known throughout Cork City and County for the quality of our playing sur- faces. A lot of hard work and expense goes into keeping our pitches in top shape throughout the year. This past week, nearly 200 tonnes of sand was spread between both pitches and training area with brushing in afterwards. Both pitches and our training area were also aerated with a special shatter master machine to a depth of

seven inches

to decompact the playing surfaces. The contract for this work was awarded to Cork Sportground Ser- vices. Thanks to Damien, Darren, and everyone else who helps with pitch main- tenance and development at Ardrath Park.
