Junior Round Up East

Quarter Final. Fr. O’Neills.

Cork JAFC

Lisgoold 1-08 v 2-03 Lisgoold advanced

to the East Cork Foot- ball semi-finals after a tense encounter with Fr. O’Neills in Paddy Walsh Park in Castlemartyr on Saturday night. It was a very spirited perfor- mance from Lisgoold who suffered several setbacks throughout the game but kept plugging away and eventually got over the line. After win- ning the toss Fr. O’Neills elected to face the strong wind in the first half

and this decision

seemed to be the right one with only 2 points separating the sides at half time on a scoreline of 1-05 to 2-00. Lis- goold’s goal came on 20 minutes after Jack Ryan was hauled down after a direct run into the box. Leading on a scoreline of 0-02 to 0-00 and after

missing a couple of free kicks in difficult condi- tions, Lisgoold needed the goal to take a de- cent lead into half time. John Cashman stepped up and held his nerve to calmly place the spot kick into the left corner. On 22 minutes, Lisgoold lost Kieran Cashman to a black card for a need- less trip. Mossy stepped into centre-back and Cian Healy came on a wing back and went on to have a fine game. Another John Cashman free left it 1-03 to 0-00 and it took 25 minutes for O’Neills to register their first score, signifi- cantly a goal after some slack defending. The advantage

seemed to

swing back Lisgoold’s way after 2 more points from John and O’Neills lost a man through an- other black card. How- ever, on the stroke of half time a fine O’Neills move resulted in a sec- ond goal and the ad- vantage seemed to lie with O’Neills. However, within a minute of the resumption, John Cash-

man pointed to leave the scoreline 1-06 to 2-00. O’Neills were finding it difficult to make head- way even with the wind advantage and it took them 8 minutes the 2nd

into half to register

their first point. The game then descended into chaos as referee Pat O’Driscoll has reason to flash black, yellow and red cards. In this period, Noel Connery brought his experience to bear, winning

and turning

over ball which he calm- ly distributed. Cathal Cashman too won his fair share of possession in front of a defence that was under pressure for most of the second half, but with Caoimhan completing a fine mark- ing job, few scores were conceded. An important free from John on 18 minutes gave some relief as O’Neills continued to struggle in front of goal. They did tack on 2 pointed frees to set up a nerve racking last 10 minutes. Jamie Woods kicked a long range point from the wing on

28 minutes which was to be the last score of the game. on

the were

O’Neills pressure

handed a great

opportunity to win the game in the dying mo- ments after a misplaced pass but some excellent defending by Cathal saved the day. Football is set aside now for a few months as attention now turns to hurling. Team: C. Cronin, P. Le- ahy, B. Flynn Caoimhan O’Shea, M. O’Con- nell, K. Cashman, C. Scannell, C. Cashman, J. Cronin, L.
