Intermediate Hurling
Championship 1st Rd - Aghada 2-15 v Ballygarvan 3-9; Cobh 13/5/2017 Aghada’s hurlers suc- cessfully negotiated 1st
round championship
game for 2017, when they had a 3 point winning margin over a battling Bal- lygarvan outfit in Cobh on Saturday night last. Play- ing into the wind and the sun for the 1st
half, Aghada
were straight out of the blocks via a Will Leahy free when Aaron Stafford was fouled in possession just seconds after the throw in. John Looney made it 2 after 7 minutes from play. A physically big Ballyga- ran outfit , having missed a few opportunities, had their 1st
score of the con-
test from a placed ball on 9 minutes. Next up corner back Alan Creedon burst forward from defence, and then off loaded to Charlie Terry, who made a good catch before slotting
the sliothar between the posts. their
Ballygarvan had their 1st from play a minute later which was followed by 2 more pointed frees from Leahy for Aghada. Bally- garvan’s third point was a nice effort from out on the wing, and it was 5 v 4 after they pointed a free with 10 minutes to go in the half. Next Leahy made a great catch from a puc out, and then off loaded to Pearse O’Neill who tore through the centre of the Ballygar- van defence before point- ing. Straight from the puck out however, Ballygarvan breached the Aghada rear- guard and finished smartly to the back of the net for the 1st

John Looney’s attempt at goal was blocked. Cian Fleming had another go from the rebound. This too was blocked, however Kevin O’Hanlon was on hand to turn this rebound into the net and Aghada were back in front – 1-6 vs 1-4. A Will Leahy free on 29 minutes finished the scoring for the half and Aghada were in a good po- sition turning to play with the elements at their back. The 1st
15 minutes of the 2nd period saw Aghada
hit 4 points with only two in reply from Ballygarvan. Looney cut over a super sideline. Cian Fleming hit two fine frees. The 1st earned after a good turn- over
forced by Aghada
and the second was won by Mike Russell after he won a good possession. Hardworking midfielder Stephen O’Keeffe proba- bly hit the pick of the four when he pointed on the run from the left hand side- line. Ballygarvan hit their 7th
, from play, on 18 min-
utes, but from the puc out, Aghada struck for another major. This time Fleming found himself one on one with his marker, and after quickly rounding him, he hit a great shot low to the side netting to the ‘keep- ers right and Aghada were 2-11 v 1-7 in front. Bally- garvan pointed again from play, but Leahy plucked the resulting puc out from the sky and pointed to keep the 7 point lead in- tact.
Aghada
be well in the ascendancy by now, but a minute lat- er, Ballygarvan struck for another well worked goal and were back in the con- test again. Next O’Hanlon

played in Aghavine. The final score line reflected the close nature
of the
contest. O’Neills opened the scoring from the throw in with a well taken point by the hard working Aoife Dalton. From the result- ing puck out Blackrock opened their account with a well taken point. That was to be the nature of the first half, two evenly matched teams moving the
ball from end to end result- ing in some great scores es- pecially from Fr O’Neills Kellagh Cullinane up front who scored four points from play. Kate Ahearn kept the score board tick- ing over with a 45 and a free from the same range. Ciara O’Doherty add- ing to the tally with a fine score just before the break leaving the half time score of Fr O’Neills 0:08 to Blackrocks 0:06 who only managed to score 3 points from play, their other 3 points coming from 3 close in frees. The second half was an
action packed affair with tremendous performanc- es all over the field. The full back line were first to the ball and marshalled Blackrock’s best line with aplomb. The

behind our attacking play and never gave up. The O’Neills girls won the mid- field battle and upfront everyone played well. The score line was level on 4 occasions in the sec- ond half and this added to the tension and excite- ment. Goals win matches and it was Blackrocks two to O’Neills one that swung the final result in their fa- vour. Going into the final 5 minutes O’Neills found themselves 3 points adrift and fought extremely hard to reign in this game. The excitement was so much so that I lost track of who scored the final few scores in this pulsating contest. Final Score Fr O’Neills 1:15 Blackrock 2:13. How- ever all is not lost. This was the final league game and had O’Neill’s won it would have set up a rematch be-

took off on a speedy solo run, and finished with a good point. From the puc out, a dogged Ballygarvan replied by hitting a fine score from the wing. Agha- da ‘keeper Trevor O’Keef- fe found Looney with his puck out and Looney hit a great score from right on the sideline. When Flem- ing pointed a free he had earned himself in the last minute, Aghada were 6 clear as the game headed for time added on. Credit Ballygarvan who fought to the end and 2 minutes into injury time they earned a close in free. O’Keeffe saved the free well, but in the scramble that followed, the ball was bundled into the net and it was a 3 point game again. There was a couple of more plays left in the game, but the Agha- da goal wasn’t threatened again, and when the final whistle sounded it was Aghada that were cele- brating as they marched through the front door into the next round. A job well done on the night, in a game where Aghada nev- er fully burst into top gear, so hopefully lots more to come from this bunch as the year goes on. Next up in championship will be an East Cork derby against Sars , down for the 23rd
of tween these two teams
again in the final. This re- sult earns O’Neills a play- off game between Enn- iskeane who played out a draw against O’Neills earlier in the league. That

Junior A football League – Aghada 3-13 v Cobh 2-6 This was a game that
had to be refixed after floodlight failure in Cobh caused the original fixture to
be abandoned. With
championship coming up against Castlelyons on Friday, this proved to be a good work out in prepa- ration for that. Played in Rostellan on Mon the 15th the 1st
half was an even
enough affair with the home side leading 5pts to 4 at the break. Hav- ing played against a very strong wind this was a great position for Agha- da going in at the break. They were thankful for some excellent defending from Alan Walsh, Kane Looney and Aaron Butler.
is down to be played this coming Wednesday or Thursday in Aghavine. What a mouthwatering contest that is going to be. If the girls can repro- duce the fighting spirit
57 Notes
The game really exploded into life in the second half with the net shaking on ei- ther side 5 times in total. Thankfully, Aghada hit 3 of these goals – Jordan Ryan and Richie Condon goaled
from play, while
Danny Creedon buried a penalty. With Mark Healy continuing to impress and Conal Rabbitt and Da- vid O’Keeffe both getting through an amount of work, Aghada started to pull away as the half wore on. Score

came as midfield substi- tute Aiden Kelleher rolled back the years, when he split the uprights from the half way line. In the end Aghada took the points on offer winning by 10 points in the end. Aghada Team and scor-
