East Cork Junior ‘A’ Football Championship - Lisgoold Book Semi-Final Spot With Victory Over Fr O’Neill’s Lisgoold 1-8

Fr. O’Neill’s 2-3

Lisgoold go forward to the penultimate

stage of

the Michael O’Connor Motor Factors sponsored East Cork Junior ‘A’ Foot- ball Championship when they had two points to spare over Fr. O’Neill’s in a frac- tious quarter-final played in Castlemartyr on Saturday evening last. Fr O’ Neill’s finished

the game in turmoil with a straight red, two yellows followed by a red and two black cards while Lisgoold had two black cards to their credit also as one tried to keep up with the cards, nev- er mind the match which was not as good as it was expected to be. Fr O’Neill’s got a terrific

start with a goal from Eoin Motherway after 42 seconds following a great solo from Billy Dunne. John Cashman

opened Lisgoold’s scoring with a point from play. Lis- goold got on top in the mid- dle of the field and dom- inated the half with John Cashman scoring 1-3, the goal from the penalty spot. Both sides lost a player to a black card, Kieran Cash- man for Lisgoold and John O’Driscoll for Fr. O’ Neill’s in the space of six minutes’ play before Fr O’ Neill’s got a lifeline when full forward Paudie Higgins flicked the ball past Ciaran Cronin with five minutes remaining on the clock as John Cash- man contributed two more points to let

the half time

score 1-5 to 2-0 in Lisgoold favour. Fr. O’ Neill’s turned to

play with the wind in the second half but were dealt another blow when they lost John Barry to another black

Intermediate Hurling Round 1- Sarsfields Book A Date With Aghada After Win Over Ballymartle

Sarsfields 0-18 Ballymartle 0-13

Sarsfields, had to over-

come a shaky start be- fore booking their round 2A spot against Aghada, when they had five points to spare over a Ballymar- tle side that began bright- ly in this Intermediate hurling contest, played in Pairc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon. In part this was due to

some poor puck-outs by the Sarsfields custodian, Shane Collins who hit three balls straight to the opposition who gladly accepted the gifts as Bal- lymartle were six points to the good in as many minutes with Liam Corry, Shane Cummins, Daniel O’Leary (2) and Niall Crowley (2) all raising

white flags, before Robert O’Driscoll got Sars off the mark in the 8th

min-

ute. From here

to half

time it was a very even contest with Luke Hack- ett keeping Sarsfields in touch with a further four points before the interval, while Robert O’Driscoll and Niall McCarthy all weighed in with points as Sarsfields trailed by 0-7 to 0-10 at half time with Daniel O’Leary (3) and Shane Cummins on tar- get for a very strong Bal-

lymartle outfit. Sarsfields made two

changes at half time with the introduction of Ray Ryan and Ronan Mur- phy and along with some positional switches, the Riverstown outfit began to get a grip on proceed- ings. Luke Hackett was to be their scorer in chief while another sub Aaron Myers also weighed in with a brace of points as Sarsfields had drawn level by the 44th

each. With Ray Ryan, Gary

minute at 0-11

Grey and Joe Barry show- ing all their experience, Sarsfields got to grips with the now fading Ballymar- tle side that managed just three second half points and while Sarsfields were made to work hard, af- ter their poor start, once they got in front, there was only going to be one winner as Hackett, Ro- nan Murphy and Aaron Myers secured the victo- ry and a place in round 2A against Aghada. In- deed, were it not for two fine saves by Ballymartle

keeper Paul Allen, the

victory might have been secured a little earlier. Sarsfields: L Hackett

card after five minutes while John Cashman pointed again for the Lisgoold men. Kevin

O’Sullivan pointed

from a free for Fr O’ Neill’s on 40 minutes to put a point between the sides but again Cashman put Lisgoold two points clear

with another

fine point on 48 minutes, before all hell broke loose in the form of a card storm. Cal Hegarty (Fr. O’Neill’s) was first to go, being issued with a straight red card on 49 minutes followed by John

Cronin (Lisgoold) getting a black two minutes later and then Deccie Dalton (Fr O’ Neill’s) was next to go re- ceiving a second yellow and a red on 52 minutes When the

O’Driscoll put

away, Kevin O’Sullivan reduced the margin again with a converted free for Fr O’Neill’s but try as they might O’ Neill’s could not break down what was now a blanket Lisgoold defence. Lisgoold brought back all

their players into a rear- guard action with only Da- vid O’Reilly (goalie) and full back Niall Griffin within 70 metres of the O’Neill’s goal as the Aghavoine men threw everything into attack. It al- most paid dividends as Lis- goold were haunted when Sean O’Connor’s powerful kick got a deflection out for a 45, when it could easily have ended up in the net. Seven minutes of added time elapsed as a delight- ed Lisgoold side finally got

across the line to book their semi-final spot. Scores: Lisgoold; J. Cash-
