by ALAN SHEEHAN & CLAUDIA SHANAHAN O’KEEFFE

John O’Donoghue,

Development Officer for Ballintotis Fit4Life, cele- brated his 60th

birthday in

Cork City last Friday, 12 May Mr O’Donoghue, who

turned 60 on Thursday, the day before his party at the Commons Inn, has been a member of Ball- intotis Fit4Life for nearly a decade. “His birthday was on

Thursday but we booked the party for Friday,” said Vicki Murphy, Mr O’Donoghue’s daugh- ter. “It was a good night.

He was delighted with the party He was really thrilled. There was a great turnout and the band were fantastic. The Commons Inn really did it all and looked after us really well. There was a great turnout from East Cork too. He was delighted with it as he didn’t know we had invit- ed them. He was chuffed,

really blown away.” Mrs Murphy, original-

ly from the Northside of Cork like her father, moved to Castlemartyr around 15 years ago, joining Ball- intotis Fit4Life shortly af- ter with Mr O’Donoghue later joining too. “He’s been running

since he was 52,” said Mrs Murphy. “He was a plas-

terer but retired early due to the recession. He was never into exercising until after he retired and joined the club. It gave him a purpose, something to do. Since then he’s run mara- thons and half-marathons and now he is kind of the mentor for the Couch-to- 5k groups.” Ballintotis

Fit4Life is

just one club that runs a Couch to 5k programme, in which people new to running or walking for sport are trained by Mr O’Donoghue and col- leagues over a period of months with the aim of completing a 5k or race of similar length such as the Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race held every spring.

37 Birthday “It is a big commitment

for him,” said Mrs Mur- phy, “and even though he’s not from the area, he loves the club. He loves coming down from Kocknaheeny every Tuesday and Thurs- day for the 5k group or to go running with the lads if the 5k is done. He loves the club and he’s really dedicated to it.”
