East Cork Soccer Notes Boscos St Michaels Champions

St John Boscos are the

St Michael cup champions for 2017 winning 4-2 on penalties after extra time against a strong Buttevant side at Turners Cross It was a game with lim-

ited scoring chances and pretty soon it turned into a battle for both teams with both giving their all. We saw a fantastic display by Tommy Laffan at full back who handled the threat of the very dangerous Butte- vant winger for the entire- ty with help from Kieron Murphy and also a tireless display of forward play by

Stephen McCarthy lead- ing the line for Boscos. The early stages of the

game saw Buttevant with a couple of

long range

efforts which didn’t real- ly threaten Ray Savages goal followed by a couple of corners which led to nothing. Then the Boscos midfield trio of Shane Wiggins, John Paul Quig- ley and the evergreen Paul Cashman (who played one of his best games in a boscos shirt) got a grip on the game and Boscos enjoyed a purple patch which led to Chris Cot-

ter firing over from a fa- vourable position from a Shane Wiggins free kick. The game kicked into life soon after when Buttevant should have scored after a shot outside the box. The next phase of play led to a goal bound effort from the head of Stephen McCa- rthy which was only kept out with a brilliant save from Buttevants keeper. The

introduction of

Rob Williams for Kieron Murphy early in the sec- ond half started to prove fruitfull as he started to find space which led to a

fantastic run leaving four Buttevant defenders in his wake before unleashing a 20 yard drive which the Buttevant keeper just de- flected away. The intro- duction of Cal Smith led to a formation change by Boscos going for the win before 90 mins and his willing running up front opened up the game even further. The last few min- utes led to a siege on the Boscos goal with 4 corners in a row led to unbelieva- ble defending from Boscos defense with skipper Bar- ry Fitzgerald leading his

troops brilliantly and Sean Corcoran and Ian Barrett putting in some last ditch saving tackles. Josh Deady came on for

Paul Cashman at the start of extra time and was the difference for boscos in the two 10 minute half with his drive and calm- ness on the ball when it was needed. Only a few half chances in extra time led to the Lottery that is a penalty shoot out. Buttevant went first and

after some “mind games” from the confident Ray Savage they missed.

fidently buried his penalty with Buttevant

Rob Williams then con- answer-

ing to make it 1.1. Josh stepped up next placing into the top corner bril- liantly. Next up the Boscos stopper Ray Savage dived superbly to his left to stop Buttevants third kick. Ian Barret

and calmly dispatched his confidently making it 3.1 to Boscos. Buttevant scored and them cometh the man cometh the hour Ray Savage stepped up to score the final penalty to become the hero saving two and scoring the deci- sive winner…. Savage by name savage by nature. It was a fantastic night
