Midleton Concert Band’s Joint Gig with US Wind Ensemble Very Well Supported
by ALAN SHEEHAN
held a joint concert with a Wind Ensemble
Midleton Concert Band from the
United States this past Tues- day evening, 16 May. Held at the GAA Hall in
Midleton in front of a full house, the
free-to-attend
event was opened by the Midleton Concert Band opened the show ahead of a performance by the Univer- sity of Massachusetts-Arm-
herst Wind Ensemble. “There was a good at-
mosphere,” said Robert O’Brien, Musical Director of Midleton Concert Band. “The hall was full; there was about up to 100 peo- ple there and the audience really enjoyed it. The US band played to a very high standard and were very en- tertaining. Their conductor was very engaging with the audience. The young play- ers from Midleton played
really well to open the show. The Americans joined them on stage and even got a standing ovation at the end of the show. It is great for the young players to share a stage with a band of that high calibre. It shows them where they could be stand- ing someday if they put in the practice.” Midleton Concert Band
was founded in 1951 as Midleton Holy Rosary Brass & Reed Band and has
continually improved since then, finding success in ma- jor championships
during
the last decade. Mr O’Brien is current musical director of both the senior and jun- ior bands. “We are heading to Clo-
nakilty on 1 July for the Band Championships,” said Mr O’Brien, “with the Jun- ior Band competing in the Junior Section. That’s our next big event. We are really looking forward to it.”

Lisgoold/Leamlara Community Council to Hold Fundraiser to Procure an AED for Ballincurrig
by ALAN SHEEHAN
LISGOOLD LEAMLARA COMMUNITY COUNCIL COFFEE MORNING/BOOK SALE/ CAKE SALE/RAFFLE
IN AID OF THE COMMUNITY DEFIBRILLATOR FUND FRIDAY 26TH MAY 2017 AT LISGOOLD COMMUNITY HALL 9:30 AM TO 12 NOON Lisgoold/Leamlara
Community Council will hold a fundraising coffee morning, bake sale and book sale in aid of the community defibrillator fund on Friday, 26 May. The
combined event
will be run from 9.30am until 12pm and will be held at Lisgoold Hall. The proceeds will go towards the installation of a de- fibrillator in Ballincurrig and the maintenance of defibrillators in Lisgoold and Leamlara. Three years ago a sub- of the
committee Lis-
goold/Leamlara Commu- nity Council fundraised to replace the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for Lisgoold village and to procure an AED for Leamlara Village. The East Cork Rapid Re- sponse (ECRR) aided with the instillation of the pub-

lic access AEDs, which have been used on a num- ber of occasions since. However Ballincurrig
village is still without a public access AED and the Community Council is now looking to ensure all three centres of the com- munity have easy access to such vital lifesaving equip- ment. Funds raised will be used to service an older unit and procure a cli- mate-controlled housing cabinet, with an overall plan to eventually make training in AED operation available to people. Donations of cakes,
books, raffle prizes and also assistance on the morning
would much
appreciated. For those wishing to volunteer their time or donate some of the above
items, please
contact Liz Ahearn on (087) 619 7678 or Sara McSweeney on (087) 684 1949.
