Cobh Child Geniuses Who are Changing the Internet
Technology whizzkids
from all around the country scooped up well deserved awards at
this
year’s iconic eir Junior Spiders Award winners, which were announced at a ceremony at Croke Park last week. The Awards recognise and reward stu- dents and young adults, aged 4 to 19, for the in- novative ways they use the internet, especially in the areas of website coding, development and design. Colaiste Mhuire from Cobh did exceptional- ly well, winning three awards on the day. Emma Worrall and Kara Buck- ley won in the ‘Best Con- cept’ for the Giga Spiders (aged 13-15 years old) for their project ‘Inspire Yourself with Sport’. “We started by making a home page where we explained the aims of our website which are
to increase
public awareness around the benifits of sport for mental health. We also made a page on mental
illness to bring aware- ness to the most common types
of mental illness
and their facts. We made information pages on De- pression, Anxiety, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, OCD,
substance abuse
and little things you can do to improve your well- being. We realized that many who need to use sport may not know how to work out. For this rea- son we made a page de- scribing an easy workout you can do in little time, we made a video describ- ing the workout. We know that mental illness is not cured through sport so we included the contact details for a number of helplines and organiza- tions that can offer sound medical advice on our get help page. The last thing we did was made an about us page to explain a bit about the eir Junior Spider awards,” the girls said. Rithik
from Colaiste
Mattar, also Mhuire,
won for his ‘Best Individ- ual’ project, ‘Experience is the Best Teacher’. “I made this to inform my family, friends and other interested people
about
my exchange year, and to save and share my experi- ence of the year in a blog. I want to motivate other people to do an exchange especially in Ireland, I had a great
experience
reading blogs from oth- er exchange students last year and felt this was the best way of expressing my emotions.” Colaiste
Mhuire also
came up trumps in the ‘Best TY Project’ catego- ry, as Rebecca Ring and Cian Lynch won with their Ballynacrusha Beef project. “We felt a web- site would be the best medium to showcase our research of Irish Angus beef
farmers, as part of
the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools’ Compe- tition. Coming from an urban area, we are very aware
of the lack of
