inadequate rent supple- ments and rising rents are all adding to our home- less problem Cllr Noel Collins told Monday’s Southern Committee in County Hall. The lack of affordable housing options
across
East Cork has led the Independent Cllr to seek the establishment
of a
fully serviced caravan parking and camping site in the Midleton area. “With the housing cri-

sis many people searching for emergency housing have to make do with a tent or a caravan, but have nowhere
to pitch
them.” The numbers of home-
less in the area is increas- ing, people need some- where safe and warm to go and need shelter, he told the executive. The Simon Communi-
ty say the lack of available beds in their emergen- cy accommodation led them to turn 10 people a night away in the first two weeks of May. While emergency ac- commodation is designed to be a short-term solou- tion to homelessness the charity say they have yet to see the benefit of the governments housing strategy. Sophie Johnson, re-

She is very involved in the fundraising for us and she helps out with Ani- mal Rescue Cobh as well. Jackie is fantastic for us. She also organises Grab a Gúnas, other table quiz- zes, car boot sales – she is a fantastic lady altogeth- er.”

so far for the group. “It’s been very good so
far,” said Ms Mellerick. “We
have seven hors-
es rehomed now; five in Germany and two here in Ireland. So far we have had three foals born. One baby we
are on night
watch for at the moment so hopefully the mare will foal soon. And then we have another one due in June. Seven rehomed and five babies is very good for the year so far. The Cobh-based group
aims to rescue, rehabili- tate and rehome equines and fundraises to achieve this and also for veterinar- ian work for the equines in their care, such as re- cent and expectant moth- ers and their foals. “We would like to en- courage people to get in touch with us,” said Ms Mellerick, “if they are interested in fostering or adopting, or if
they have
land for temporary graz- ing for the summer.” Cobh Rescue Horses
can be contacted via the group’s Facebook page.

nights.” She said any type of housing would be wel- come as it would help ease the pressure on the service.
