Cork County IHC Round 1 - Midleton V Milford
Midleton 2-10 Milford 1-12
Midleton were made
work hard for their one point victory over a sea- soned Milford side in round one of the Cork County Intermediate Hurling Championship played at a windy Kil- worth on Sunday last. Fresh from their pre-
liminary round victory over Grenagh, Midleton opened the scoring with a sublime
point from
a side-line by Padraig O’Keeffe on five minutes but they were under pres- sure in the opening half
as wind assisted Milford, were good money for their 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 20 minutes, courtesy of a brace of points from Henry O’ Gorman and a long-range point from a free by former Cork play- er, Eoin Dillon. Cormac Beausang struck a second point for the Magpies but O’ Gorman replied with another pointed free to keep them at bay. Sean O’Riordan added a fur- ther point for the Avond- hu side but Beausang and Anthony Watson traded
a point apiece to let the score 0-7 to 0-3 in Mil- ford’s favour at the break. Midleton came out all guns blazing for the second half and Sean O’Farrell had a point on the board inside the first 30 seconds while Cor- mac Beausang banged over two points; one from play and one from a tricky free, to rein in the opposition. Henry O’ Gorman was minding the business at
the oth-
er end for Milford and restored
the four-point
difference with two more converted frees. Sean O’ Connell made it five with a point scored awkward- ly as he was about to be hooked, but while Mil-
ford were still in control, Midleton were improving as the game wore on. The
tide started to
turn for Midleton at the three-quarter mark when a long dropping ball into the square, from Pat O’ Shea, ended in the Mil- ford net courtesy of a deflection off Eoghan Walsh and now we had game on. Midleton in- creased the intensity and when Padraig O’Keeffe pointed a free on 47 min- utes there was only the minimum between the sides. Up stepped sub Ian Kennefick a minute lat- er with a gem of a goal after he broke through the Milford defence and struck a great ball beyond
James Linehan. Aside from the opening point, this was the first time the Magpies led and further points from sharpshooter O’ Keeffe put them in a commanding four-point lead going into the clos- ing stages. Milford were dealt a
severe blow when influ- ential mid fielder, Ger O’Mahony received a second yellow card and he departed the scene. Midleton used the ex- tra man well though Pat O’Regan pulled
back
a point on 30 minutes for Milford. However, a minute into added time Sean O’Connell rattled the Midleton net with a gem of a goal to level the
game. It was still there
to be won for either side but as extra time beck- oned up popped Padraig O’Keeffe which would prove to be the difference at
the end as veteran Eoin Dillon missed a 65 to tie the game with the last puck of
the game.
Another big scalp for Midleton as they are now guaranteed at

Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 1 - Aghada V Ballygarvan Aghada 2-15
Ballygarvan 3-9 Aghada will need to
show significant im- provement if they are to be involved at the busi- ness end of this season’s Intermediate
Hurling
Championship, after this hard earned win over Ballygarvan in Cobh on
Saturday evening. Aghada , playing
against the breeze were in a strong position at half time as they led by 1-7 to 1-4 with Kevin O’Hanlon slotting a 25th minute goal, while Wil- liam Leahy bagged four
points for the winners. Mark Kennefick shot 1-2 for Ballygarvan in that opening half and while Ballygarvan were always playing catch up they showed plenty of spirit in the second half, after Aghada had moved into a seemingly unas- sailable lead. Points from John
Looney, Pearse O’Neill, Cha Terry and Cian Fleming set
Aghada
on their way and when Fleming bagged their second goal with just over ten minutes remain- ing, they looked to be heading for a comforta- ble victory. Ballygarvan had other ideas and a goal from Kennefick brought the advantage back to a three point game. Kevin O’Han- lon and Cian Fleming restored the six point advantage but a third
Ballygarvan goal left Aghada sweating just a little before referee Mark Maher called time as Aghada set up a round 2A clash with Sarsfields, where they will need to show improvement. Aghada: C Fleming
1-3, W Leahy 0-5, J Looney 0-3, K O’Han- lon 1-1, P O’Neill, C Terry and S O’Keeffe 0-1 each. Ballygarvan: M Ken-
