May 2017 St Aloysius, Carrigtwohill, Students Get Active

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

A one of a kind fitness

programme is promoting healthy living among our teenagers. Last Friday students at St Aloysius Carrigtwohill

took part in the Active8 8km walk, jog and run. The event marked the

end of an 8 week “full on” fitness programme, pro- viding the pupils with the tools for a healthy lifestyle. The 762 student body chose to use the event to

fundraise for an Astro turf hockey pitch which had great support from local businesses and the com- munity. This is the second

year of the healthy hab- it training camp at the Carrigtwohill secondary

college. School fitness instructor

Edel Maher said activities included “various guest speakers and health initia- tives” aimed at getting the students to lead “fit, active and healthy” lifestyles. A personal trainer put

the students through their paces over the two month period. Liam Carney Cork

City coach and journal- ist Mary White a former Gaelic Footballer for Cork delivered nutritional and fitness talks to the student

body. As a result of the pro-

gramme the students were given meal plans en- couraging everyone to eat healthy. A recent study found

that 1 in 4 Irish children are overweight.

The national health

check carried out by safe foods Ireland found that 54 per cent of parents of overweight children, and 20 per cent of parents of obese children, didn’t real- ise that their children were not at a healthy weight.
