15 years of experience in shop floor operations. However, the OML com- munity, which consists of machine vendors, manufacturers, and solu- tion providers, can continue to grow the language so that it remains rele- vant for the latest machines and technology.
IoM Network Platform Goes Further
While OML solves the open com-
munication issue, an important con- sideration remains: how to apply new standards to machines and processes currently in use. Machine vendors will resist, understandably, the significant expense of applying a standard to aging machines, some built before the IoM was even conceived. The solution to this issue is a
new hardware networking platform specifically designed to enable the Internet of Manufacturing. With the Valor IoT manufacturing device, existing machine data is converted into OML while providing the infra- structure for a robust IoM. The entire communication mechanism is secured using TLS. Embedded within the Valor IoT
manufacturing hardware is support for the connection of every existing machine process on the shop floor, and the conversion of acquired data into the OML format. Connecting the Valor IoT manufacturing device accelerates the adoption of OML, allowing it to be deployed completely. This immediately enables Industry 4.0 and smart factory computing to be effective across an entire factory. Valor IoT manufacturing pro-
vides data connections for automated and manual processes, as well as for operational activities including mate- rial verification and logistics. Plus, it provides a robust and secure hard- ware platform for OML data flow.
SDK for Easy Customization Combining the Valor IoT manu-
facturing hardware with a software development kit (SDK) makes it easy to integrate OML into existing soft- ware packages, such as ERP and MES. A configurable dashboard shows the status of operations at a machine, line, or at site level. The IT team needs only to use
one simple interface across all data and events from the shop floor, elim- inating the barriers that existed with the many different types of data- gathering methods required in the past. For the asset management team, the entire operation and root- cause analysis can be viewed easily, enabling quick reactions to issues that affect delivery. Live production planning then becomes a reality by being able to take advantage of busi- ness opportunities quickly, which creates a new level of flexibility in response to changing demand. The cost of material investment,
logistics and scrap can be dramatical- ly reduced through the implementa- tion of Lean material management, which also ensures that material inventory is maintained accurately. The data collected can be used for the most advanced quality management as it provides a fully-traceable build record for materials and processes. With these new steps forward,
complex SMT equipment can be on the fast-track to integration with existing equipment; Industry 4.0

tools can become a reality without the need to invest in needless asset replacement and without waiting. Existing MES and ERP systems can access shop floor information easily to create a new level of effectiveness. Finally, new Industry 4.0 computing functions can be implemented as in- house developed solutions, machine vendor-supplied solutions, or third- party solutions such as Valor MSS from Mentor Graphics.
