EPE Corp Partners with Nordson DAGE for Quality Inspection

By Tracey Bell P

rivately held and veteran owned, EMS provider EPE Corporation has been in oper- ation since 1965. For more than five decades

and through three generations, the company’s en- gineering expertise and dedication to quality and integrity have been its foundation. Based in Man- chester, New Hampshire, EPE’s established infra- structure supports customers in a variety of indus- tries including defense and aerospace, RF commu- nications, medical, robotics, industrial, and the In- ternet of Things (IoT). EPE Corporation is a manufacturer of high-

reliability electronics, electronic assemblies and integrated box-build systems. The company offers a full range of services from design and new prod- uct introduction to sophisticated logistics solu- tions. EPE creates products for customers in a va- riety of end markets, transforming their ideas into tangible products and enabling them to respond quickly and effectively to business opportunities and fluctuating market demands. The company’s 55,000 ft2 manufacturing fa-

cility supports the electronics manufacturing needs of businesses of all sizes throughout North America and Europe from printed circuit board as-

sembly, backplane, electromechanical, flex cir- cuits, and system assembly to supply chain solu- tions and logistics. Its electronics manufacturing processes are scalable to support accelerated time- to-market targets, are flexible to meet variable market demands, and focus on complex assemblies for low-to-medium volume, high-mix products. Just as important, however, is EPE’s commitment

system with X-Plane® software in November 2015. President of EPE J.D. Bell says the system was

chosen over competing systems because of its high- resolution capabilities and ease of use. He added that the company was a good match because Nord- son DAGE’s sales representatives were interested in EPE’s needs and willing to help them find the sys- tem that best fit. EPE was able to work with a DAGE system at another location during the evalu- ation process before finalizing the decision. Now, almost a year later, Bell still stands by

the decision. He says the system consistently per- forms to expectations. He also adds that its ease-

to its customers and to exceeding expectations on every project.

Partnership with Nordson DAGE EPE partners with other companies that

share the same values: Quality is king and cus- tomers always come first. One such partner, Nord- son DAGE, has been involved with EPE since the purchase of its XD7600NT Ruby X-ray inspection

of-use has far exceeded what was expected. It has been a successful sales tool as well, because high- resolution X-ray capability has become more of a necessity for companies of EPE’s size. Other bene- fits to the company include the Ruby’s diagnostic tool for test failures or field failures, process verifi- cation, and significantly improved accuracy in through-hole solder fill determination. In addition, Bell says that the Ruby is a complementary tool to its Agilent 5DX X-ray system, allowing the compa- ny to diagnose even the subtlest of defects. The implementation of the XD7600NT Ruby

X-ray also improves the company’s troubleshooting and failure analysis capabilities. The X-Plane soft- ware speeds up the detection of defects that were undetectable with conventional X-ray technology without damaging the board. In addition, the soft- ware enables users to obtain a nondestructive, vir- tual cross-section of the area of interest. With the X-Plane software, the image quality

of the X-ray system can now be expanded into sep- arating individual layers at a level of quality that traditional

laminography techniques cannot

achieve. The software uses a proprietary CT (com- puted tomography) to create 2D X-ray slices in any plane of a PCB assembly without the need to cut or destroy the board.

Commitment to Quality EPE Corporation’s ability to produce high-reli-

ability electronic products relies not only on its in- ternal expertise and capabilities, but also on a com- plex supply chain that provides the critical materi- als, components, and services that go into the man- ufacture and delivery of its products. From product design and NPI to volume manufacturing and logis- tics, EPE leverages a diverse network of strategic supply and distribution partners that add value to
