SMT Maschinen: Energy-Saving Reflow Systems

Wertheim, Germany — In a reflow soldering sys- tem, a large part of energy is consumed by the fans. In order to save energy in SMT soldering sys- tems, the fan motors can be controlled and driven individually by frequency converters. By using SMT Maschinen’s new frequency converter solu- tion, a continuous adjustment of the motor control is possible. Individual zones can be perfectly controlled,

leading to significant energy savings. A reduction in frequency by just 5 Hz results in a 20 percent lower fan motor power consumption. Since each fan unit is controlled by one frequency converter, the customer benefits from energy savings as well as from process individuality. The new frequency converters are designed for

continuous operation and the compa- ny offers 10 year warranties on its fan motors. To avoid downtime on the sys- tems and to support the longevity of the fans, fan motors and frequency converters are protected from short circuits by fuses. Detailed diagnostic information

of the activity of the frequency con- verter and of the corresponding fan motors are communicated by a bus to the control system for process moni- toring. The temperature of the motor and the fan speed can be identified by the frequency converter. Through this pro cess, a constant flow of process gas and reliable heat transfer on the PCB are easy to control.
