<Teacher’s Comment>

This book seems to have evoked strong emotions from the reviewer. Merely looking at the book transforms the reviewer into Belly’s world. The review begins by introducing the protagonist, Belly, and her love of summer. It continues by discussing the reasons why Belly loves summer. Summer is the time where she is able to learn new things and have experiences she may never have had otherwise. Spending time with her family and friends on Cousins Beach is the only thing she looked forward to because “winter and spring didn’t count as a part of life.” The reviewer does a great job of keeping your attention throughout the review. Phrases such as “this summer was the beginning” and “special summer that changes everything”, piques a readers curiosity and keeps them enthralled until the end. The strength of this review is that the author writes about their intense reaction

to this story and to the main character. However, the author could have gone into more detail about what parts of the story line they most resonated with. The reviewer mentions that this book brings “tears of joy and happiness” but then goes on to say that this wasn’t a book where she sat “sobbing for lifetimes”. Taking the time to clarify what she meant by both those statements, would help to support her position. In writing a review, if the author makes the claim that “this book was good” it must be supported by the use of examples and details from the book. The author should not solely rely on their own emotions to back up this statement.
