New York Transit Museum 모든 사람들의 추억이 전통을 만들다
하늘을 나는 자동차나 최고 속력의 자기 부상 열차처럼 새로운 교통 수단에 대한 사람들의 관 심은 끊임 없다. 하지만 우리가 매일 이용하는 대중 교통은 대기 중의 산소처럼 불편함을 느 끼지 않는 이상 큰 관심을 갖지 않는다. 브루클린 다운타운에 위치한 뉴욕 교통 박물관은 무 심히 지나치고 있는 일상의 한 부분을 차곡차곡 모아 대중들이 함께 추억할 수 있는 100년의 역사를 전시하고 있는 곳이다. 한참 동안 입구를 찾게 만들던 박물관은 예전의 지하철 역사 를 그대로 이용해 찾는 이들에게 즐거움을 주었고, 지하 2층 플랫폼에는 1800년 대 후반부터 1900년 대 후반 사이의 지하철 차량들이 그대로 보전되어 있어 놀라움을 안겨주었다. 또한 시대별 광고들은 나이 지긋한 관람객들에게 잔잔한 미소를 선물해주었다. 박물관 지하 1층에 는 지하철 건설의 역사, 지하철이 움직이는 원리 등을 직접 작동하며 이해할 수 있도록 되어 있었고 실물 크기의 버스에서 운전을 하며 좋아하는 아이들과 시대별로 다른 지하철 출입 개 폐기들을 이리저리 움직여 보는 아이들로 인해 활기가 넘쳤다. 미래의 유산이 함부로 버려지 고 있는 것은 아닌지, 사람들이 역사의 주인으로 남겨진 박물관이 얼마나 아름답고 가치있는 것인지 아이들과 함께 고민해볼 수 있는 훌륭한 공간이었다.

When I think of New York, one thing that comes to my mind are all the subway stations that are there. That is exactly what the New York Transportation Museum used to be......a subway station! You can learn all about the history of the subway system at the museum. While I was there I interacted with small train models, I saw old carriages and I learned how the subway
was built a long time ago. It must have been really hard to build the subway because they had to use really old tools. There are pictures of men digging tunnels by hand and simple tools like pics and shovels because they did not have big machines to use at the time. They had to dig through hard rocks and under rivers all by hand. I saw models of trains that showed parts of the train carriage, like how the doors worked, how they made the wheels to stay on the tracks. There also was a real train without the top part to show what the train looked like under the carriage. The last things that I looked at were the old carriages the museum collected. I thought it was cool that the museum kept the old carriages and put them on display, you usually think of old stuff as junk, and that you don’t’ need it, but I think all the trains and car- riages have history. Some of them are even 100 years old! When I was at the New York Transportation Museum, I felt like I completed a test and I got an A. I felt like this because I thought that I would never forget what I had learned and what I did at the Museum. I thank all the brave men that built the subway because it was not an easy thing to build. They really made a difference, because now when you need to get somewhere in New York, you can get there fast and easily on the subway.
