For Belly, summer was all that counted. It was as if winter and spring didn’t count as a part of life. Summer was what she lived for, it was summer that made up life. Every summer, ever since she was practically born, she’d been going to a summer house in Cousins Beach, with her mom, her older brother, Steven, and her mom’s best friend, Susannah, and her two boys, Conrad and Jeremiah. She turned sixteen that sum- mer. It had to be special. It couldn’t be like all the other summers, spent with her drooling after Conrad. “The Summer I Turned Pretty” is a novel about a summer. That would determine the rest of her life. The way she would be. This summer was the beginning. Belly, growing up, summer was what she truly loved. She would spend it either going crazy after Conrad or wanting to be included with the boys’ games and activities. This book was one of my all-time favorites. From Belly’s perspective, not a word in this book is boring. This book plays Belly’s special summer that changes everything. From her past summers to now, Belly experiences new things and life, summer, has a whole new meaning, with it’s old one still tucked in safely in Belly’s heart. Every time, and literally, every time, I look at this book or even think of it, I instantly feel like I’m Belly, herself, facing the struggles straight up! I feel the same emotions she does because of the details that crawl on the pages of the book. I loved the fact that I felt like I’ve been going to Cous- ins Beach every summer of my life even though I just recently started reading this book and getting hooked. It was a real page-turner and sure this wasn’t like my typical reads, I still love the cartwheels my heart will do or the tears of joy and happiness that my eye would bring up. Belly goes from Steven’s little sister to something that both Conrad and Jeremiah fall for. Even though her heart’s out for Conrad, as she says, that Conrad is just a part of her heart, her and Jeremiah are friends. Too good of friends to let down. This summer brings her unexpected tears and bittersweet hardships along with new summer loves. Belly finds herself twisted in dream and reality, fighting two battles with the unreal- istic decision of all she ever needed. But, this book reached out for my heart, it wasn’t a book where I sat, sobbing for lifetimes or the book that necessarily had me at the edge of my seat, it was a bittersweet memoir of the summer she turned pretty. 벨리에게는 여름이 전부였습니다. 겨울과 봄은 삶의 일부에 포함되지 않은 것 같았습니다. 여름은 그녀가 사는 이유였고, 그녀의 삶을 만드는 것이 바로 여 름이었습니다. 그녀가 태어난 후로 Cousins Beach에 있는 하우스에서 매년 어머니, 오빠 스티븐, 그리고 엄마와 가장 친한 친구 수사나, 두 명의 아들 콘 라드와 제레미아와 함께 여름을 보냈습니다. 그리고 어느 해 여름 그녀는 16 살이 되었습니다. 아주 특별해야 할 여름이었죠. 콘라드를 쫓아다니던 다른 해의 여름과 같을 수는 없었습니다. ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ 는 여름 에 관한 소설입니다. 그녀의 남은 삶과 그녀 자신을 결정하는 여름이 바로 시 작된 것이죠. 여름은 벨리가 자라날수록 그녀가 진정으로 사랑하는 것이 되었습니다. 그녀 는 여름에 콘라드를 따라다니거나 남자들이 하는 게임과 액티비티를 함께하 며 보냅니다. 이 책은 제가 가장 좋아하는 책 중에 하나입니다. 벨리의 관점에 서 볼 때, 이 책은 전혀 지루하지 않습니다. 이 책은 벨리의 모든 것을 바꾸는 특별한 여름에 대한 책입니다. 지나간 여름부터 지금까지, 벨리는 새로운 삶을 경험했고, 여름의 완전한 새로운 의미를 알게 됩니다. 벨리의 마음속에 여전히 남아있는 예전의 여름과 함께. 저는 이 책을 읽을 때, 제가 벨리가 된 것처럼 생각되고 그녀의 문제 속으로 빠 져들었습니다. 책에 있는 자세한 내용을 보면 그녀가 느끼는 감정과 똑같은 감정을 느끼게 됩니다. 이 책을 최근에 읽기 시작하고 또 좋아하게 되었지만, 저도 마치 매해 여름 Cousins Beach에 간 것 같은 느낌을 받는 것이 좋았어 요. 그리고 책장을 넘기는 게 기다려질 정도로 재미있는 책이 되었죠. 제가 항 상 읽는 책 스타일은 아니지만, 그래도 저의 마음에 두근거림을 주고 제 눈에 서 흘릴 기쁨과 행복의 눈물이 좋거든요. 벨리는 콘라드와 제레미아에게 스티븐의 여동생에서 사랑에 빠져버리는 존재가 됩니다. 비록 그녀의 마음은 콘라드를 향하고 있지만 그녀의 말처럼, 콘라드가 그녀 마음의 일부분인 것처럼 제레미아 역시 그녀의 친구입니다. 너무나 친해서 실망시킬 수 없는. 이번 여름, 그녀는 새로운 사랑과 함께 예상치 못한 눈물과 달콤 쌉쌀한 고통을 겪게 됩니다. 벨리는 그녀가 언제나 원했던 비현실적인 결정과 싸우며 그녀 자신 이 꿈과 현실에 뒤섞여 있는 것을 깨닫습니다. 이 책은 저를 울게 만드는 책도 아 니고, 정신 없이 읽은 책도 아니지만 마음에 많이 와 닿았 습니다. 그녀는 이 책에서 달콤 쌉쌀한 여름을 통과합니 다. 저도 그녀와 함께 그 여름을 지난 것 같습니다.
