Javier Marzo is a partner in the M&A and corporate department of Garrigues’ Madrid office, where he coordinates the practice in the communications sector. Mr Marzo also co-manages the firm’s US desk. He has significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions and privatizations across a range of industries.
He joined Garrigues in 1996 and was appointed partner in 2004. He was an international associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York.
Relevant transactions in which he has participated include
acting on Telefónica’s acquisition of 51.1% of Cesky Telecom (€3.7 billion); advising Endesa, Unión Fenosa and Grupo Santander on Orange’s €8.4 billion acquisition of Amena; acting for Televisa in its joint venture with Imagina to launch a free television channel in Spain; advising FCC on its acquisition of 14 wind farms from Babcock & Brown; assisting GE in the sale of its plastics division worldwide to Sabic; and acting for Mediapro in connection with a dispute on football broadcasting rights.
Mr Marzo holds a law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1992); a degree in EU law from the Universiteit van Amsterdam; and a master’s in international relations from the University of Southern California (1995 – La Caixa scholarship). Mr Marzo lectures in communications law at Universidad Pontificia de Comillas. He has been listed as a leading individual in the Chambers Europe and Chambers Global guides, and in
