Foreword

I

t is a pleasure to welcome you to the fifth edition of this special International Law Office (ILO) publication on client service. The supplement is based on detailed research conducted for the ILO Client Choice Awards, the winners of which were announced in April 2010.

ILO initially launched the Client Choice Awards to identify those law firms that stand apart for the excellent client care they provide. This year has seen the remit expand to include individual lawyers for the first time. The research process focused on the ability of partners and

firms to add real value to their clients’ businesses. The shortlist was generated from an independent ILO subscriber survey of corporate counsel only, which received over 2,000 responses, as well as additional research and detailed interviews conducted by an in- house ILO team. The individuals and firms were assessed on a range of criteria: quality of legal advice; value for money; commercial awareness; effective communication; billing transparency; tailored fee structures; depth of team; response time; sharing of expertise; and use of technology. This year, awards were presented to a total of 201 individuals and 48 firms. Launched in 1998, ILO is the nexus where global corporate counsel engage with the world's pre-eminent law firms, and each other. It comprises a multifaceted online resource for senior international corporate counsel, providing tailored, quality-assured updates on global legal developments; a database of the world's major deals and the legal advisers involved; and a comprehensive directory of firms and partners. Recognizing its unique relationship with global corporate counsel, many of the world's premier associations have chosen to partner with ILO, including the International Bar Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association and the European Company Lawyers Association, among others. We are grateful to all of the corporate counsel and law firms that gave so generously of their time in helping us to produce this publication. Without their expertise and insight, the whole project would not have been possible.
