Winner – Energy & Natural Resources, Spain

Hermenegildo Altozano is the head of the energy and natural resources practice area in the Madrid office of international law firm Lovells LLP. He is a regular adviser to national and international companies and entities on some of the most prominent transactions in the Spanish energy sector, principally involving natural gas and renewable energy. In 1997 he led the legal team that drafted the power exchange rules. He is a professor of private international law at the University Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid and the director of the superior programme in energy law at the prestigious international business school Instituto de Empresa in Madrid. He is also the co-chair, together with the head counsel of the Spanish National Energy Commission of Energy and Regulation forum, of prominent think-tank FIDE (Fundación para la

Investigación del Derecho y de la Empresa).

Previously, he was a partner at Eversheds’ Spanish associated firm, where he headed the energy practice. From 1994 to 1996 he practised law in Houston, Texas at energy law firm Bracewell & Patterson.
