Types of work undertaken
Corporate & commercial: Hjort has a large number of lawyers who specialize in corporate law, including mergers and acquisitions. Hjort acts for a large number of Norwegian and international clients, ranging from major international companies, including some of the largest companies in Norway, to small family enterprises. Hjort is increasingly used in international matters, and although most of its work within the field of corporate law consists of assisting in day-to-day matters, its lawyers also have extensive experience as litigators in the field.
Finance & banking: Hjort has lawyers
with broad experience in the banking, finance and insurance sectors. Hjort is regularly retained for consultation and litigation by banks and insurance companies, but also argues cases against other banks, financial institutions and insurance companies. Competition & public procurement law:
Competition and public procurement rules are important in an increasing number of business transactions, and when entering into agreements and developing strategies businesses must take due consideration of these rules. Hjort advises clients on how to reach their strategic and commercial goals within the framework of competition and EU/European Economic Area law. The firm also advises clients on the regulatory aspects of mergers and acquisitions and state aid issues, and represents clients before the Norwegian Competition Authority, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Surveillance Authority, the European Commission and the Norwegian Complaints Board for Public Procurement.
Dispute resolution: Hjort has a long and proud tradition as one of the country’s leading litigation firms in commercial as well as criminal law, and most of its lawyers litigate cases before the courts on a regular basis. A large number of Hjort’s partners are authorized to argue cases before the Supreme Court, and Hjort has experience of arguing cases before the EFTA Court and the European Court of Human Rights. Stock exchange & securities: Hjort
has seen a steady increase in the number of assignments in stock exchange and securities law, which is one of the firm’s priority practice areas. Hjort assists listed companies, investors, financial institutions and investment firms, both domestic and international, and has acted as counsel in some of the major lawsuits and arbitration proceedings involving securities law. Furthermore, the firm often acts as defence counsel in penal cases within the securities law area, typically regarding insider trading.
