David Thompson is regional head of the Cape Town office’s corporate and commercial practice. He advises on all aspects of South African corporate and commercial law, particularly mergers and acquisitions. Mr Thompson is a member of the International Bar Association. He has extensive experience in the energy, oil and gas markets.
He has negotiated, drafted and advised on numerous acquisitions and disposals, such as the disposal of 25% of major oil company Shell in a black economic empowerment deal and related restructuring, and the disposal of a coal business in South Africa by a major oil company. He has also advised several funds, including Paramount, on establishment, investment and buy-outs.
Mr Thompson has advised a number of private equity investors, including Eskom Pension and Provident Fund, Standard Bank and Coast2Coast. He has extensive experience in franchising and has advised DL Petroleum on supply and franchising arrangements. He has also advised Engen on franchise issues. Mr Thompson is regularly highly ranked as a leading M&A/corporate lawyer in international industry publications such
as Chambers Global, Legal 500 EMEA, IFLR1000 and Best Lawyers International.
