Types of sport


Do you know the diff erence between a sport and a game? A sport must:


• be competitive – that is, sport is played against someone where the aim is to win or beat them


• involve some physical eff ort • have rules and regulations


• have a National Governing Body (NGB) – in football this is the FA (Football Association).

Benefi ts of taking part in sport


There are many benefi ts to taking part in sport or physical activity.


• Improve fi tness. All sport involves exercise. Regular exercise improves fi tness, which has many health benefi ts.


• Meet new people. Sport is played with and against other people. Many people who take part in sport enjoy the social aspect as much as the sport. Sport is a great way to meet new people who have a shared interest.


• Leadership. A team needs people who can organise the other players. This is an example of leadership. In really good teams, all players show leadership skills at times. Leadership skills are very important in normal life too. Sport is a good way for people to develop these skills.


• Team work. People need to work together when playing team sports. Often, the most successful team is the one that works together the best – not the one with the best players. Working together

• Resilience and self confi dence. Things go wrong when playing sport. You might make a mistake, or your opponent might win a lucky point. It is important not to let this get you down so you can continue with the game. This is called resilience. Resilience is a very important skill for everyday life.


• Self confi dence. In all sports, players need to be confi dent in their own skills. If they were not confi dent they would not try.
