B2 Fitness tests – speed 30 metre sprint test
This test is used to measure acceleration and maximum running speed.
Interpreting results

Standard test method • The aim of the test is to run as fast as possible.
• The tester measures a 30 metre straight line, and arranges cones at the start and end.
• The participant warms up and then lines up at the start. They should be completely stationary.
• Upon hearing the whistle or starter gun, the participant sprints as fast as they can to the end. The tester starts the stopwatch at the same time.
• The tester stops the stopwatch as the participant reaches the end cones.
• The test can be repeated two more times and the shortest time used as the fi nal result. There should be a full recovery in between tests – preferably at least 5 minutes.

Reliability Participants need to give maximum effort.
If outside, wind can have a big impact on results
Running surface has a big impact e.g. grass versus a running track.
Some people will be more accurate at timing than others. For a more reliable result timing gates can be used.
Validity Valid for any sports that need short bursts of fast running from a standing start e.g. rugby 150
Valid for sprinters, to predict the opening part of the race. But not as valid to predict performance later in a race, e.g. fi nal 30m in a 100m race.
Practicality
Cheap and easy to run (if using stopwatch) – not much equipment needed
Can only run for one person at a time
More expensive if using timing gates
