Power combines strength and speed. It means applying large forces in short, sharp bursts.
Plyometrics Plyometrics is the name for a group of exercises where the muscles generate:
maximum force for a short amount of time.
There are diff erent forms of plyometrics. For example:
• incline and clapping press-ups • jumping and barrier hopping • lunging • bounding
In each exercise, the performer uses the maximum force possible. This causes the muscles to lengthen and then shorten very quickly.
Applying the force in shorter amounts of time increases the power. For example, when jumping onto a box: • the performer should try and jump as high as possible
• the action of straightening the leg when launching off the ground should be as quick as possible.
