B2 Fitness tests – aerobic endurance Multistage fi tness test (MSFT)
This test is a way to measure and compare aerobic endurance. Performers have to continually run 20m in time with the beeps. (For this reason it is also known as the Beep Test.)
Equipment and people
• Flat non-slip running surface of at least 25 metres • Multistage fi tness test audio (app or YouTube recording) • Cones • Measuring tape • Loudspeaker • At least one assistant, so there is one person at each row of cones. More needed with larger groups of participants.
Standard test method • Set two lines of cones 20 metres apart
• After a warm-up, participants line up next to one row of cones.
• Upon the fi rst beep they run towards the second line of cones. They aim to reach the line before the second beep.
• At the second beep they turn around and run back towards the fi rst line of cones, before the third beep.
• Participants continue running back and forth, aiming to reach the cones before the next beep. If they reach the cones before the beep, they cannot begin their next run until the beep sounds.
• After each minute a double or triple beep shows that the level has changed. The time between beeps is shorter at each higher level. There are 23 levels in total.
• If a beep sounds before reaching the next cones, the participant is given a warning. If they get two warnings in a row then they are out. Their level, and the number of shuttle runs they complete in that level, are recorded e.g. Level 5 Shuttle 3 (L5 S3 or 5.3).
• Each participant continues until they are exhausted and unable to continue. Reliability
Weather conditions can affect results. Ideally the test would be run indoors, or in cool conditions with no wind.
This is a maximal test. If participants drop out before they are exhausted their results will not be correct.

Valid for aerobic endurance in sports with continual running (e.g. 10 000 metre track event). Less valid for non-running (e.g. cycling). Less valid for sports with intermittent running (e.g. fi eld hockey, football, rugby).
