B3 Margaria Kalamen power test This test is used to measure power in the lower body.
Equipment and people
• 12 equally-spaced stairs • Weighing scales • Tape measure or ruler • Masking tape or chalk • Stopwatch or timer
Standard test method
The test is based around running up stairs. The aim is to reach the 9th steps as quickly as possible.
• The participant warms up.
• The tester measures 6 metres away from the bottom step and marks out a start line.
• The tester weighs the participant in kilograms.
• The tester measures the height from the 3rd step to the 9th step. If the steps are the same height then one step height can be measured and multiplied by 6.
• The participant runs from the start line and up the stairs, standing on only the 3rd, 6th and 9th steps.
• The tester starts the timer when the participant's foot fi rst touches the 3rd step. They stop the timer when their foot touches the 9th step.
• The participant can repeat the test three times and the fastest time taken as their score.
The participant's power can be calculated as follows: Power =
9.8 × weight (kg) × height of steps (metres) time (seconds)
For example, Dani has a mass of 50kg and takes 0.60 seconds to climb stairs of height 1.05m. Her power is:
Power = 9.8 × 50 × 1.05 0.60
= 514.5 / 0.60 = 857.5 Watts
Reliability
Participants need to give their maximum effort.
Manual timing can introduce small errors.
Practicality
Cheap and easy to run – not much equipment or space... ...but does require stairs Only one participant can be tested at a time.
Validity
Valid as a measure of the overall power to climb the stairs. Valid for sports where lower body power is important – such as basketball, volleyball and sprinting.
