C3 Delivering a warm-up to prepare participants for physical activities


Demonstrating and positioning Demonstrations should be:


• easy for everyone to see and hear • broken down into key parts • clearly explained in simple language.


You should demonstrate the each exercise immediately before it is performed.


• Do not demonstrate all the pulse-raisers, mobilisers and stretches all at once, and expect people to remember them!


You should be clearly positioned so everyone can see and hear. If the group is large, or it is noisy, you may have to repeat each demonstration with smaller groups.


Demonstrations should be repeated a few times, to make sure that everyone understands what you are asking them to do.


Teaching points and instructions


Demonstrating techniques is a form of teaching. So you need to consider the best ways to get your points across.


• Your instructions should be clear and easy to understand.


• Break each exercise technique down into its simplest parts.


• Think about how to explain and demonstrate each diff erent part, so that participants do them correctly and safely.


• Use short sentences or key points for each part.


• Do not overload people with information, or explain in lots of detail.


• Use simple language.


• Be clear about what not to do too – for example, for a low-impact pulse-raiser you should be clear that at no point should both feet be off the ground at the same time.


Supporting participants taking part in warm-ups


After you have demonstrated each part of the warm-up, participants will try and perform it themselves. You need to provide help and support as they do so.


Your aim is to makes sure each participant is fully warmed up for their chosen spot or physical activity. You will need to:


• Observe participants. You must watch everyone carefully to make sure they are performing each exercise correctly:
