YVR is in the midst of a C$9.1bn expansion plan comprising 75 major projects over the next 20 years. With construction on so many different concepts underway, maintaining a relevant and dynamic offer during this ‘important phase’ is easier said than done. “We want to ensure we remain
North America’s best airport for our travellers and for the airlines. In order to do that, we must ensure exceed expectations and be proactive,” adds Rusu.
Flexible retail solutions Addressing challenges in advance is a priority for YVR. “On entering a construction phase, we consider various ways of maintaining the best possible passenger experience. Options might include the integration of pop-up spaces and temporary offers.” Rusu predicts 2019 will finish close
to 2018 in terms of overall commercial performance. “I don’t think we will experience double-digit growth this year, but there are certain categories which are performing really well.” Double-digit commercial growth
may not be in the offing, but could duty free shopping on arrival in Canada soon be introduced? Should the government implement this it would certainly support the local economy with new employment opportunities. “I believe all Canadian airports are
actively working on this, she says. “There has been no recent change to the situation, but we are still trying. As an airport, we know exactly what is important for us.”
Paradies Lagardère will open a new Pacific Coast News pre-security in the domestic terminal next year.
Looking ahead, she emphasises the airport’s commitment to the commercial programme. “We want to maintain a variety of appealing concepts that attract a diverse group of travellers in the future. “At the moment, we are working
on retail and food and beverage. The latter is the main priority, but there are some areas within the terminals which lack in terms of offer. “We want to enhance our
customer experience, which is why we are working on the commercial programme in general.” A strong sense of place is important
for the passenger experience. “Sense of place must be reflected through retail and food and beverage as well as design,” adds Rusu. “This is why we are focusing on local authentic concepts. “We want passengers to take a
piece of British Columbia with them when they depart from YVR.” «
Double success in Vancouver
Back in February 2019 it emerged Paradies Lagardère would open four
stores at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) after being awarded two concession packages. Coastal News, Relay and Deepwater

Spirit are located in the international terminal and open this year. Construction of a further Pacific Coast News outlet at the airport is due to begin this month, ahead of its opening in the domestic terminal (pre-security) in 2020. All concepts will enhance the YVR
customer experience with fun locally- themed items and travel necessities,
according to Gregg Paradies, President and CEO, Paradies Lagardère. Mirela Rusu, Director, Commercial
Services, Terminals, Vancouver Airport Authority, tells TRBusiness: “Each store is in a different space and the news concept is part of the expansion of our international terminal.” The international terminal, which
handles all inbound and outbound flights, “integrates a really interesting and dynamic offering of food and beverage, retail and duty free,” according to Rusu.

World Duty Free has been the duty free incumbent at Vancouver International Airport since 2007.
“We have a strong partnership with Dufry and work closely with them on different initiatives. From marketing and customer experience perspectives, we work with them to better understand the customer profile and align them with that.”
