NEWS ROUND-UP Arrivals sales offset departures in Japan


Japanese travel retail operators are reporting a slowdown in airport departure store sales as a result of stricter inspection procedures at airports in China, putting off some Chinese travellers from making purchases – in the same volume as they once did. This has had the biggest knock-on


affect on tobacco sales, particularly Iqos e-cigarettes, along with some popular


beauty products. Renovations taking place in a large


number of stores at both Narita International Airport and Haneda International Airport in Tokyo are also partly responsible for a deceleration overall. Thankfully, some of those same operators


have still seen growth overall from their operations due to the steady rise in arrivals and downtown duty free store sales, according to TRBusiness Asia correspondent, David Hayes. Narita, Haneda and Osaka’s Kansai

In an exclusive interview with Luke Barras-Hill, Aer Rianta International CCO and Deputy CEO, Anthony Kenny says that the company is prepared for a hard Brexit situation and the potential restoration of duty free sales between the UK and EU. “There are a number of permeations


on what could happen,” says Kenny. “It would seem there is momentum gaining in the UK that if there is a no deal, duty free would return (albeit there needs to be a change in legislation on the UK side). The Irish government has said it would

team and we are reviewing all the implications and scenarios with the best information we have available,” said Kenny. “We’ve engaged with customs and
