BEAUTY: ESTÉE LAUDER COMPANIES – KILIAN
Kilian in bold new laced lipstick launch; Le Rouge Parfum
Ahead of the most important DF&TR trade exhibition of the year – TFWA WE in Cannes – Estée Lauder Companies prepares to share some of its most daring new launches, including a range of perfume-scented lipsticks by Kilian. Charlotte Turner reports.
L
e Rouge Parfum, the first makeup line from Kilian Hennessy, grandson of the
LVMH group founder, can be described as a ‘wardrobe’ of six bold red lipsticks, available in matte or satin finishes, with an additional twist…they are also fragrances. Known predominantly for his
‘eco-luxe’ fragrances from Paris under the By Kilian brand name, it is no surprise to learn that the CELSA graduate believes ‘perfume is an art’. Inspired by frequent visits to the
family cellars in Cognac as a child, many of his fragrances are described as being reminiscent of the sugar in alcohol and the wood of the cognac barrels. Interestingly, parent company
of the Kilian brand, Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) references the Kilian fragrance brand in its fiscal 2019 results, insisting that its played a part in the sales growth of the group’s luxury portfolio, alongside Jo Malone London, Tom Ford Beauty and Le Labo. However, although tried and
tested in perfumery, for the first time, Kilian really had to put his creative flair to the test in his quest to offer women their ‘signature scent’ and the perfect red lip colour. “The quest of every woman to find
their perfect Rouge is exactly the same as the quest to find the perfect scent,” insists Kilian Hennessy, Founder and Creative Director
of Kilian. “Once they find it, it becomes their signature.” ELC tells TRBusiness that the
collection of lip colours are already available in strategic airports within Asia Pacific as well as some downtown duty free shops. However, it be rolled out worldwide from February 2020.
‘Timeless and fearless’ “Kilian Hennessy felt it was time to focus on this timeless and fearless makeup essential,” says ELC. “He addresses the eternal quest
for the weapon of seduction that should be part of every woman’s makeup arsenal: the perfect red.” Of course the magic happens,
when the lipstick case comes off, allowing a blend of ‘gourmand and floral notes’ to permeate the air. The Le Rouge Parfum scent is
described as a ‘specially-created harmony of neroli and vanilla’. “Add to this multisensorial mix,
the unique optical effects of a matte or satin finish, magnifying the intense and pure colour pigments in their own play of light,” says ELC.
OCTOBER 2019
“Kilian’s ambition to make perfume visible is in full manifest. “Kilian uplifts lip colour into an
objet d’art in itself, a talisman to carry close from day to night to early dawn.” In an interview, Kilian Hennessy
was asked why he decided on a range of lip colours as the brand’s foray into cosmetics. “My goal has always been to
offer women beautiful weapons of seduction and strong shields of protection at once. “Red lips are iconic and express a
timelessness and sophistication that is a Kilian aesthetic signature.” «
“The quest of every woman to find their perfect Rouge is exactly the same as the quest to find the perfect scent. Once they find it, it becomes their signature.”
