Travel retail a ‘vital channel’ for Philip Morris as it strives to create a smoke-free world
The launch of Phillip Morris International’s Iqos 3 Duo in the duty free channel this month is another milestone in the development of its smoke-free product portfolio. Andrew Pentol tracks the evolution of the company’s DF&TR business.
T
he Philip Morris International (PMI) vision for a smoke-free future is ‘totally’ reflected in
its duty free strategy and approach. This is according to Edvinas
Katilius, Vice President, PMI Duty Free, who says the company wants to offer every smoker with no intention of quitting, a better alternative to cigarettes. According to the World Health
Organisation, around one billion people are smoking cigarettes. This equates to one in every seven people worldwide. By 2025, this number is expected to be around the same. While the best option would be
to quit smoking many will not. PMI believes these people deserve better alternatives to continued smoking. The company’s Iqos products may not be risk free, as items with nicotine are addictive, but they are still a better choice for existing adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking, says PMI.

for men and women who would otherwise continue smoking. Katilius tells TRBusiness: “Around
eight million adult smokers have already stopped using cigarettes and switched to Iqos, our electronically heated tobacco product. “This is a remarkable achievement,
but there is so much more to be done. Our goal is that by 2025, 40m adult smokers will have given up cigarettes for good by switching to a product in our smoke-free portfolio.” The DF&TR business can play
an important role in reaching this challenging goal, “which would change the lives of millions of adult smokers, along with those of their families and loved ones,” adds Katilius. In terms of product development,
PMI claims around eight million adult smokers have switched to Iqos.

PMI will launch its new Iqos 3 Duo in duty free this month. The newest iteration of its successful Iqos product, is the company’s most advanced so far and has been ‘designed around consumer needs’. The charging speed is two-times faster than the Iqos 2.4 Plus and there is now the possibility for two consecutive uses.
Katilius says: “Iqos 3 Duo is the latest addition to our smoke-free product portfolio that we’ve developed to offer a better alternative to cigarettes for adult smokers. “We’re getting faster at delivering
upgrades and new products, to provide the opportunity for more and more adult smokers, who would otherwise continue smoking to switch to better alternatives.” Travel retail is an ‘important and
vital channel’ in terms of creating the smoke-free world PMI seeks. “We have the unique opportunity to reach millions of travelling adult smokers and to inform them of a better alternative to cigarettes.”
