Putting It Into Practice Activity—Chapter 7
The objective of this activity is to give the reader practice with the following: • Familiarization with food records • Assigning the appropriate food group(s) to each food item
• Understanding the process of converting food groups into grams of carbohydrate, protein, and calories
• Understanding how the total nutrient intake is determined.

a. These worksheets include the menus for three days and the percentages consumed for each menu item that have already been entered into the nutrient analysis form for the reader’s convenience.

Follow the instructions to complete the Putting It Into Practice Activity:
Step 1: Review the Food Record EXAMPLE to see the pattern of documentation of one day’s complete intake.
Step 2: Review the Food Group Analysis EXAMPLE to see the how food groups were assigned to the menu items and how the amount eaten of the food groups in Column D changes based on the percentages of items consumed.
Step 3: Refer to Calculating Nutrient Intake EXAMPLE to view the how the total for each food group is used to determine grams of CHO, PRO, and FAT, and total calories consumed.
Step 4: Starting with Food Group Analysis Day 1, carefully follow the directions at the top of the page. Columns A and B have been completed for the reader’s convenience. Refer to Food Groups and Macronutrient Values for assistance as needed with food group assignments.
