Calculate a client’s nutrient intake given foods and portion sizes consumed. Nutrients include macronutrients (CHO, PRO, and FAT) and calories. CHO = 4 calories per gram, PRO = 4 calories per gram, FAT = 9 calories per gram Refer to Table 7.15 in text for list of Food Groups and Macronutrient Values
EXAMPLE
Ms. J ate the following meal for lunch (she ate 100% of her meal). Calculate Ms. J’s nutrient intake for lunch. 3 ounces grilled salmon (21 grams protein, 9 grams fat) 1/2 cup steamed broccoli (5 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams protein) 1/2 cup buttered rice (15 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams protein, 5 grams fat) 1/2 cup pineapple chunks (15 grams of carbohydrates) Total grams of CHO = 35 grams Total grams of PRO = 26 grams Total grams of FAT = 14 grams Total calories = (35 x 4) + (26 x 4) + (14 x 9) = 370 calories
PERCENTAGE OF IDEAL BODY WEIGHT (% IBW)
FORMULA % IBW = (Actual Body Weight ÷ IBW) x 100
EXAMPLE
Ms. B’s actual body weight is 125 lbs., and her IBW is 143 lbs. What is her % IBW? % IBW = (125 lbs. ÷ 143 lbs.) x 100 = 87 %
PERCENTAGE OF USUAL BODY WEIGHT (%UIBW)
FORMULA % UBW = (Actual Body Weight ÷ UBW) x 100
EXAMPLE
Mr. J’s actual body weight is 165 lbs., and his usual body weight is 185 lbs. What is his % UBW? % UBW = (165 lbs. ÷ 185 lbs.) x 100 = 89%
