APPENDIX A | Focus on Formulas CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT OF FOODS FORMULA
Calculate carbohydrate (CHO) content of meal given portion size and food group. Starches and starchy vegetables: 15 grams CHO per 1/2 cup serving Fruit: 15 grams CHO per 1/2 cup serving Milk: 12 grams CHO per 1 cup serving Meat, fish, eggs, meat substitutes: 0 grams CHO Fat: 0 grams CHO
EXAMPLE
Calculate the grams of CHO in this meal: 1/2 cup oatmeal (15 grams CHO) 1/2 cup canned peaches (15 grams CHO) 1 scrambled egg (0 grams CHO) 2 sausages (0 grams CHO) Total = 30 grams CHO
CONSISTANT CARBOHYDRATE DIET FORMULA
1. Calculate recommended amount of carbohydrate (CHO) calories given total calories. Recommendation: 45% – 65% of total calories in adult diet is carbohydrates. Total Calories x 45% to 65% = CHO calories
2. Calculate grams of carbohydrates (CHO) per day given total carbohydrate calories. CHO calories ÷ 4 calories/gram = Grams of CHO/day
3. Calculate distribution of carbohydrate (CHO) calories throughout the day. Grams of CHO/day ÷ 4 meals and snacks daily = Grams of CHO per meal or snack
EXAMPLE
1. 1800 Total Calories/day x 50% = 900 CHO calories 2. 900 CHO calories ÷ 4 calories/gram = 225 grams of CHO/day 3. 225 grams CHO/day ÷ 4 meals and snacks daily = ~56 grams CHO per meal or snack Distribution: Breakfast (7 AM): 56 grams CHO Lunch (11 AM): 56 grams CHO Snack (3 PM): 56 grams CHO Dinner (7 pm): 56 grams CHO
