FORMULA Average Daily Caloric Intake = (Caloric Intake Day 1 + Caloric Intake Day 2 + Caloric Intake Day 3) ÷ 3 EXAMPLE
A three-day food record was completed for Mr. W. Using the data below, calculate Mr. W’s average daily caloric intake: Day 1- Monday: Consumed 1746 calories Day 2 - Tuesday: Consumed 1980 calories Day 3 - Wednesday: Consumed 1802 calories (1746 + 1980 + 1802) ÷ 3 = 1843
BODY MASS INDEX FORMULA
BMI = Weight in kg ÷ height in meters squared Height in cm = height in inches x 2.54 cm per inch Height in meters squared = (height in cm/100) x (height in cm/100) Weight in kg = weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 kg/pound
EXAMPLE
Ms. R is 5’6” and weighs 155 lbs. What is her BMI? Height = 66” x 2.54 = 168 cm (168 cm/100) x (168 cm/100) = 2.82 meters squared Weight = 155 lbs. ÷ 2.2 kg/pound = 70 kg BMI = 70 kg ÷ 2.82 meters squared = 24.82
CALORIC CONTENT OF FOODS FORMULA
Calculate caloric content of food item given portion amount and calories per gram. Food item type (CHO, PRO, FAT) x calories per gram = Calorie content Carbohydrates (CHO) = 4 calories per gram Protein (PRO) = 4 calories per gram Fat = 9 calories per gram
EXAMPLE
1 slice of bread = 15 grams of CHO, 3 grams of PRO, and 1 gram of FAT (15 grams x 4 calories/gram) + (3 grams x 4 calories/gram) + (1 gram x 9 calories/gram) = 60 + 12 + 9 = 81 calories
