Embroidery is used to decorate or embellish fabrics. It can be done by hand or machine. For hand embroidery we use skeins of thread. There are a wide variety of stitches and effects that can be worked in.
• Embroidery thread is made up of six strands; use two to three strands at a time.
• Use crewel needles (large eye) for embroidery. • Start with a few running stitches along the line to be embroidered. These secure the stitching and are covered as you work embroidery stitches over them.
• Finish by weaving thread through stitches at the back.
Classroom-Based Assessment
This section can be linked to CBA1: Creative Textiles.
To embellish means to make an item more attractive by the addition of decorative details or features. In textile items this can be done during the manufacture by dyes, patterns and weaves. Stitching, appliqué, beading, lace, ribbons and jewels can also be used.
Stem stitch
Stem stitch is used to outline shapes or initials in crafts like embroidery, appliqué or tapestry. It forms a rope-like effect and can be worked on straight and curved lines.
Method: 1. Begin with a backstitch to secure the thread. 2. Work from left to right along the design, taking even-sized, slightly slanted stitches.
3. The thread should always come out above the previous stitch, about half- way along that stitch.
