Discovery Learning There are some new safety symbols to be found. See how many you can find.
• If a poisonous substance is swallowed, bring the patient to hospital immediately. Bring the container of poison along with you.
• If the victim is unconscious, place him/her in the recovery position and call an ambulance.
• If the poison is corrosive (eats into and damages body tissue) do not induce vomiting. Instead, give the victim sips of milk to neutralise the poison.
Drowning 23.6
Children can drown in just a few centimetres of water and should be supervised at all times when near any water. • Never leave babies or children in the bath unsupervised, not even for a minute.
• Do not leave uncovered containers of liquid around the house.
• Store away paddling pools when not being used.
• Preferably, fill in garden ponds while children are small. If this is not possible, cover ponds with a rigid grille or fence them off securely.
Fire safety
To protect a home and reduce the risk of fire: • Install smoke alarms (smoke detectors) and test batteries weekly to check that they are working.
• Keep a fire extinguisher in the centre of the house. • Keep a fire blanket near the cooker in the kitchen. • Place a fireguard around fires. Never hang a mirror over a fireplace.
