Find out what a tetanus shot is and why it is important to get one after getting cut with metal. Do you know how to deal with a nose bleed? Or a cut? If not, find out and share the information with the class.
Did You Know?
The Department of Health recommends that you don’t use pillows for babies and that you ensure they can’t snuggle down too far inside a quilted sleeping bag.
Suffocating and choking
Another big risk to babies is choking or suffocating, which occurs when the airways are blocked and the victim cannot breathe. They can easily swallow, inhale or choke on small items such as buttons, peanuts and small toys so keep small objects out of the reach of small children and babies.
How to avoid suffocation and
choking • Choose toys that are designed for the age of the baby or child. Encourage older children to be careful with their toys around younger children ( safety symbols, see p. 331).
• Lay a baby on its back in a cot to sleep. Do not put babies to sleep in an adult bed or on the sofa, and do not use pillows, as they can cause suffocation.
• Be careful with plastic bags, as young children can put these over their heads and suffocate.
• Curtain and blind pull cords should be kept short and out of reach of children.
• Remove bones from fish as they are a choking hazard for people of all ages.
