Many household cleaning products and medicines contain poisonous substances that can cause serious injury if swallowed or spilled onto the skin.
Safety with medicines
• Store all medicines in their original containers.
• Use according to the directions on the label.
• Keep them locked in a press out of the reach of children.
• Dispose of all out-of-date medication safely.
• Never use medicines prescribed by a doctor for one person on another person in the family.
Safety with chemicals and cleaning agents
• Store in the original containers and follow the directions for use.
• If you must remove a substance from the original container, transfer it to a glass or plastic container. Label it clearly with the name of the chemical and store in a cupboard that is out of reach of children and can be locked.
• Store in a cool, dry place. Aerosols are dangerous if overheated, and dampness will rust many containers.
Safety symbols
Cleaning agents and household chemicals carry hazard symbols and safety warnings to protect users. Always follow instructions carefully.
Did You Know?
Since 1 June 2017, all safety symbols appear in the shape of a red diamond with a white background. These have replaced the old orange square symbols that may still be on older products stored in some homes.
