Biesterfeld is expanding its facilities in Hamburg with the opening of the Biesterfeld Lab and Innovation Centre. Covering a total area of 800 m² the premises will be used with immediate effect for application-related laboratory activities. These include the

development of innovative and market-oriented formulations, carrying out of product tests and customer-specific project

work. The Biesterfeld Group also has regional laboratories in Norway, Turkey and Poland. An existing laboratory in

Hamburg has been integrated into the new application laboratory to make the new Biesterfeld Lab and Innovation Centre. The premises also contains a conference room and a modern presentation and meeting area, which can be used for product launches and technical training sessions.

Tests for hydroalcoholic gels

Zurko Research are helping manufacturers in the development of hydroalcoholic gels, products that can be designed either as cosmetics, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009; or as biocidal products, in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012. Like any other type of skin-

application products, these formulations should be safe, which means it is important to carry out relevant tolerance tests. On the other hand, it is demonstrated that the effectiveness of these products

is broad and immediate. Ethanol, the most common alcoholic ingredient, appears to be the most effective against viruses; while propanol has a better bactericide activity. Therefore, hand hygiene will

be satisfactory when products meet the recognised standards of efficacy. For this suspension studies are conducted, which aim to assess hygienic capacity on various microorganisms, bacteria (UNE-EN 1276), yeasts and fungi (UNE EN 1650), virus (UNE EN 14476); and under real conditions (EN 1499 for washing and 1500 hygienic hand-by-friction

treatment). Hydroalcoholic gels also

often contain emollients and humectants, which help prevent dry skin and replace part of the water that is removed by alcohol. Zurko Research propose some studies aimed at those formulations designed to bring value beyond the main cleaning quality, which will help to adhere to consumer use. Among the claims that can be linked to these product types include: Evaluation of the dermo protective or healthy skin effect; Sensoriality.

A high-tech yet natural routine

We take care of our faces on a daily basis, because it is the part of our body most exposed to the external environment, and to scrutiny from other people. To protect, repair, and make it more beautiful. At least we can maintain its

appearance in harmony with our personality, with the most active care products possible, which are enjoyable to use and do not damage the environment. For 2020, Naolys proposes a

simple day and night face care routine, integrating active plant cells and ingredients that are natural or of natural origin, based on five products. Formulas to be adapted, developed, or customised:

PERSONAL CARE GLOBAL

l An anti-wrinkle firming serum to be used day or night

l A day cream to optimise epidermal function

l A protective and restorative serum for fragile areas (around the eyes and lips)

l A relaxing oil to soothe and prepare the skin for sleep

l An energising night cream to help the skin’s natural repair process These five products have been

developed in accordance with the new ISO16128: they contain at least 90% ingredients of natural origin. To enable the development of

innovative textures or to renew existing formulas, Naolys’ active ingredients are available in various

forms, which can be integrated into any natural-care formula: l Cells in glycerine – in dispersed or transparent form – for aqueous-based liquid formulas such as serums, creams, gels, etc.

l Cells in sunflower oil for oil- based liquid formulas such as oils, balms, rich formulas, waterless products, etc.
