INSIGHT GERMAN CASINO ASSOCIATION

The Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of licensed casinos in Germany grew by 25.6 per cent in 2019. In total, the GGR was €860.263m (as compared to €684.840m in 2018). With that, legal casinos surpassed the 2007 GGR.

From 2007 on, casinos were highly affected by regulations and new competitors, especially online gambling. They were able to make a comeback though. With a rise in GGR, there has also been a rise in visits in 2019, which saw a 13.21 per cent increase , which means about 6.4 million guests in German casinos (compared to 5.7 million in 2018).

The biggest contribution came from slot machines with a rise of 32 per cent, about €700m (compared to 2018 with €531.1m). However, table gaming also rose in 2019, with roulette, blackjack and poker yielding a GGR of €160.130m (2018: 153.742 euros).

This reversal of a trend was made possible with investments in gaming culture and gaming security by the German licensed casino operators.

FIGHTING A RANGE OF BATTLES - INCLUDING THE VIDEO GAMES SECTOR

The summer of 2019 saw the launch the a new version of Grand Theft Auto GTA 5 and the response from over 50 countries to block this latest update of the video game. The reason for the intervention: the new edition of GTA 5 integrates an online connected casino. Online gambling is regulated or prohibited in countries that have blocked GTA 5. In Europe, these include France, Italy, Greece and Norway. GTA Online is available for PC, Playstation 4 and XBox One from the age of 18. In the Diamond Casino & Resort, the new downloadable content lets users play poker, roulette and blackjack in a virtual casino with a realistic ambience.

“A video game like GTA 5 introduces target groups to online casinos. Online gambling is prohibited in Germany, even if TV advertising sometimes suggests otherwise,” stated Otto Wulferding, CEO of the German Gaming Association DSbV in 2019. According to the annual report of the German games industry, GTA 5 is the third best-selling video game ever. In addition to the classic purchase of computer and video games, more and more virtual goods, additional content and subscriptions are being bought online. According to analysis, the global video game industry generates €36,700 every single second. There are six new gamers joining the video game audeince worldwide every second.

Mr. Wulferding warned: “Dealing with GTA 5 with its portfolio of classic game formats is a signal for how online casinos en passant penetrate the game world and are perceived as normal. There is also the area of transactions in which the players can shop and play. Players who are faced with online casinos in video games may lose legal awareness. The step to legally prohibited online gambling with real bets is not far.”
