GAME DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT REALISTIC GAMES
that the player has an understanding of the concept but is also presented with a gameplay that feels different. When done successfully, creating a branded mechanic that transcends through a series of games can act as a trust mark by which players immediately know they are going to get a quality, entertaining gaming experience that meets their expectations.
From a game design perspective, how do you keep a concept such as Game Changer fresh and engaging with each iteration when applied across a series of titles?
Flexibility and creativity are key. With Game Changer, by adapting the delivery mechanic with each application the experience is distinctive from game to game and offers a unique blend of features with every iteration. Te concept also creates almost unlimited bonus round combinations, which means that players are unlikely to ever play the same board game twice. Te win potential of each Game Changer title is another engagement driver, as players stay on the game for longer in order to trigger the bonus round for the chance to cash in on big prizes.
What differentiates Game Changer from concepts being brought to market by other content developers? How do you ensure new concepts stand out from the ever-growing crowd?
Te millions of potential board game combinations available with Game Changer make for a core differentiator and a mechanical element we’re proud of. Its flexible application across titles is also rare and we’re looking forward to being even more creative with upcoming variations. For a new concept to take off, it has to be easy for players to grasp yet with
a level of uniqueness and complexity that make it new and exciting. As we’ve seen with previous blockbuster mechanics, a concept might not find instant success, but then suddenly hits the headlines months after it was introduced.
Is there an element of cherry picking the best parts of other content developers' concepts or is everything you produce completely in- house?
Realistic Games has always strived to be original and we have a signature style that runs throughout our portfolio. While we draw inspiration from other concepts, we will always add a Realistic spin that is quintessential to our brand. In that sense, rather than cherry picking, we see what features or concepts are performing well on the market and use that research to guide our own development. When an idea like Megaways comes along and gains longstanding popularity, it acts as a major motivator to content developers to create a concept that achieves equal success.
How do you decide a concept is worth the investment to develop across your portfolio? Is there an element of risk involved?
Risk is an inherent factor of any experiment, but without it we would never progress as a business or as an industry. Te trick is to calculate that risk and conduct thorough research and development to ensure you have taken every step to avoid but also prepare failure. Every now and then, however, you just have to take the plunge. Although our proof of concept and testing showed that Game Changer had huge potential, there was also an element of instinct. Sometimes you have to go with the gut – and this time it has certainly paid off.
