Te digital future of the Isle of Man

“I understand that the world has changed over the last
decade and that the Isle of Man needs to refocus. Our
regulation isn’t as far-reaching as it once was and we need to hold up a mirror to ourselves and look at the things we need
to improve and that’s a process we are engaging with in innovative ways.”

In the final session of the day, John Coleman, CEO of Microgaming, rolled a verbal hand-grenade into the room at the Isle of Man eGaming Summit, hosted by KPMG.
Te conference session at the Comis Mount Murray Hotel began with a 10-year history of eGaming on the island, with statements from all of the interested parties including protagonists from government agencies and private businesses. It proved an interesting catch-up on the history of the island and the influential role that eGaming has played in the development of the economy. At least, that was the flavour of the event until Mr. Coleman chose his moment during the CEO session.
“Te gaming industry faces a challenging 10 years; the world has changed and the Isle of Man position needs to adapt,” Mr. Coleman told the audience. “I don’t think anyone in the online gaming industry is comfortable with 21 per cent of GDP on the island coming from eGaming. I think the ambition for the island over the next 10 years is to lower this figure, and I genuinely think the Isle of Man needs to find the next big industry to sustain that level of growth, which you won’t find from this industry. When we came here in 2001, the Isle of Man was the obvious choice for Microgaming; it ticked all the
boxes in terms of regulation and protection. It was a different time in 2001. We had a government that was open and willing to engage in dialogue, and it was an island that was open for business - but things have changed along the way. If we were a business looking to start again from scratch, it is highly unlikely that we’d start- up in the Isle of Man. Over the next 10 years, my desire is that something other than eGaming will be the dominant force on the island.”
It was a calculated moment, one that surprised many of those seated in the audience and changed the course of our subsequent interview with Lyle Wraxall, Chief Executive at the Isle of Man’s Digital Agency, part of the Department for Enterprise of the Isle of Man Government. Tough if we were anticipating indignation, Mr. Wraxall subverted those expectations, giving a sanguine response to the concerns raised while agreeing that a change of direction was needed.
WIDENING THE ISLAND’S REMIT “eGaming is a single sector within the remit of
Digital Isle of Man,” explained Mr. Wraxall. “Our focus in this last year has in fact been much more concentrated upon blockchain, as opposed to eGaming. Addressing the issues raised regarding eGaming, I understand that the world has changed over the last decade and that the Isle of Man needs to refocus. Our regulation isn’t
