PENNSYLVANIA – Pennsylvania's sportsbooks slowed in February but still surpassed $500m in wagers for the third consecutive month, while online casinos tallied nearly $80m in revenue in February, bringing largely good news to the state.
"With just 28 days and a schedule with one NFL game, even if that game is the Super Bowl, a pullback from January to February is expected," said Dustin Gouker, analyst for
PlayPennsylvania.com. "Pennsylvania remains one of the strongest markets in the US, and March Madness will almost certainly put the state back on the upswing."
SOUTH DAKOTA – South Dakota Governor, Kristi Noem, has signed a bill that details the legislative framework for how sports betting will shape up in the state. The hope is that the first bet will be placed by September 1.
The bill will allow online bets to be placed but only within the premises of a land-based sports book. It set the tax rate at nine per cent and named the South Dakota Commission on Gambling as the regulator. Sports betting will be allowed at all commercial casinos in the historic mining town of Deadwood and tribal casinos in Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux, Yankton Sioux, Flandreau Santee Sioux, Lower Brule Sioux, Crow Creek Sioux, Rosebud Sioux, Oglala Sioux, Cheyenne River Sioux and Standing Rock Sioux. South Dakota tribal casinos will also be able to operate retail sports books.
Anyone wishing to place a bet in the state will need to go to Deadwood for in-person registration. Deadwood is a six-hour car journey from Sioux Falls, the state’s largest city, with in-person registration likely to prove an obstacle.
NEVADA – Caesars Entertainment is taking legal action against several insurance companies who are refusing to pay out over COVID-19 losses worth more than US$2bn. The lawsuit has been filed in the Eighth Judicial District Court of Clark County, Nevada, stating that the insurance companies have not paid anything despite Caesars paying more than $25m in premiums.
Caesars says it bought property insurance coverage to protect against 'all risk of physical loss or damage' resulting in interruption to business . Most of the policies don’t exclude loss or damage caused by a virus or pandemic. The lawsuit stated: "The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on Caesars Entertainment's and its wholly-owned subsidiaries' properties, business and employees, as well as the communities where the company operates and serves. The company purchased broad property insurance coverage to protect against ‘all risk of physical loss or damage.’”
