To check the trim, simply look at the transom drag. If it looks turbulent (A), move forward. This is particularly important in the new designs with very flat rockers.
Balance the boat with a small amount of leeward heel. This gives the rudder ‘feel’ – the boat tries to turn into the wind and will help the sails to set better. Too much rudder to correct this weather helm will cause turbulence and slow the boat down (B). The rudder will then act as a brake trying to resist the turning moment. You may have more control holding the tiller pan-handle style.
