The tidal flows listed for tidal diamond B shows that the tidal flow will carry him west from Chidham Marina as the tide ebbs out of the harbour, then south out through the entrance of Namley Harbour from 0830hrs to 1400hrs BST. Tom plans to sail west along the coast until sometime between 1300hrs BST and 1400hrs BST. The tidal flow starts to re-enter the harbour at 1430hrs and continues to flood north (at the entrance) and east towards Chidham Marina for the rest of the day. Tom could also have obtained the same information from a tidal stream atlas or smartphone app.
Step 2: Predict the conditions you will experience 第⼆步:情形预测
Tom is confident sailing in the estuary but concerned about the exit through the entrance to Namley Harbour as the almanac predicts rough water in a southerly breeze during spring ebbs. During Tom’s predicted passage the wind and tide are opposed until the tide turns, so he expects a choppy sea in the morning, but as the wind is light it should only be a small chop. When the tide turns in the afternoon for the return trip, the seas will flatten as the wind and tide are together, making it a pleasant return trip to Chidham Marina. Visibility will be moderate, so for safety he decides to carry a radio as well as flares and looks at safe havens along the route. He selects Bosnor Ferry, Warren Point and West Warren Point. He
