Don’t forget, the information included here can be found on our Thrive@Matravers section on our website (www.matravers.wilts.sch.uk/thrive).

The rate at which technology advances it phenomenal, however staying on top of what children have access to online is a challenge, and the responsibility, for parents. Social media in particular is commonly misused by children, which can have a significant impact on their welfare.

Social Media

Issues which arise from the unmonitored use of social media can include: Mental health issues including body dysmorphia – bullying – photos taken from the account and used elsewhere – exposure to indecent imagery – grooming by adults – exposure to malicious communications.

On the school website there is guidance on how to monitor or regulate your child’s use of the internet in the home and on their phone. It’s possible for children to have harmfull experiences on all applications, however a list of apps to be exceptionally wary of include: Snapchat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Houseparty, Kik, Askfm, Vine and TikTok

For more information you can visit https://www.getsafeonline.org/ and http://www.safetynetkids.org.uk/ Together, our aim is to support children to thrive!

What to do if... you want support with your teenager

Since 2015 Matravers has been a flagship school in Wiltshire for supporting students and parents where there might be mental health concerns, or worries that behaviours could develop into disorders.

As a Thrive Hub we have a dedicated team of Pastoral Managers trained in delivering a number of courses aimed at supporting families through different situations. Our STOP course, aimed at tooling up parents to support their teenagers, has been very well attended with some parents now attending their second round of sessions.

The course is an informative and supportive environment where everyone attending is free to share as much or as little as they wish. For more information or to book a place email STOP@matravers.wilts.sch.uk or call reception and ask to speak to a member of the pastoral team.
